AUSTIN, Texas – Indiana Softball fell to University of Texas in the final game of the Texas Invitational, 13-7. The Hoosiers were also slated to play South Carolina, but the game was canceled due to travel.
Indiana jumped to a 6-0 lead in the second, scoring all six runs with two outs on a trio of Texas errors and a three-run homer from senior CaraMia Tsirigos. After senior Erin Lehman reached on a fielding error by Texas pitcher Paige von Sprecken, freshman Bella Norton singled through the left side to put two on. Junior Aimilia McDonough brought in the game's first run as she singled to left to plate Lehman. A throw to first by von Sprecken on sophomore Rebecca Blitz's bunt sailed into right field, allowing Norton to score. The third Texas error came as catcher Randel Leahy attempted to stop Blitz from swiping second, as her throw missed the bag and fell to centerfield, bringing in McDonough. Tsirigos' blast to left capped off the inning as she knocked Indiana's first home run of the season.
An Indiana fielding error and pair of walks loaded the bases for Texas in the bottom of the same frame. Mickenzi Krpec plated the first Longhorn run of the day as Kelli Hanzel drew a bases-loaded walk before a flyout to McDonough in left stranded three.
The Hoosiers (2-7) got that run back in the third on an RBI double from Norton, bringing in Lehman, who walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from senior Kayla Mathewson. Norton finished the game 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run.
Two more bases-loaded walks in the third cut the Indiana lead to 7-3 before freshman Emily Goodin stepped in to replace sophomore Tara Trainer in the circle. An RBI groundout by Kaitlyn Washington and a single from Hanzel made it 7-5. Texas further trimmed to lead in the following inning to just one run on a sacrifice fly by Leahy to bring in Reagan Hathaway.
The Longhorns (6-3) finally broke through in the fifth inning, tying the game on a sacrifice fly before taking the lead on another bases-loaded walk. For the day, Texas scored four runs off of bases-loaded walks.
A five-run sixth inning pushed the advantage to 13-7 as the Longhorns knocked five hits in the frame.
Goodin (1-1) took the loss for the Hoosiers, while Brooke Bolinger (2-0) earned the win, tossing 4.2 scoreless innings in relief.
