Jackson misses quarterfinal pass in overtime
ST. LOUIS – The Indiana wrestling team continued their trek through the 2017 NCAA Wrestling Championships in Thursday night's second session at Scottrade Center. Senior Nate Jackson (184) bowed out of the championship bracket in heartbreaking fashion, a loss in sudden victory to 8-seed Jack Dechow (Old Dominion). The bout, slated to be the tightest Round of 16 match in the loaded 184 lbs. bracket, came down to the final takedown. Three other Hoosiers saw their championships weekend come to an abrupt conclusion in the consolation bracket.
Jackson led the match after one period, fighting off Dechow's late shot for a 2-1 lead. The Hoosier senior started down in the second, broke free, and scored another takedown for a 5-2 advantage.
But Dechow countered with the same scoring sequence in the third period. He escaped early in the final two minutes and persevered for a late takedown to tie the bout. With no riding time to split the difference, the wrestlers headed to sudden victory.
Dechow ended the bout within the next 30 seconds. Jackson took the opening shot, Dechow slipped the grip, and the Monarch spun around for the winning takedown.
Elijah Oliver's second championships run came to a conclusion on Thursday evening in his wrestle-back match with Johnny Jimenez (Wisconsin). Oliver scored the first takedown, but Jimenez tied the match with consecutive escapes in the first and second period. Jimenez followed with a momentum-shifting takedown to take a 4-2 lead into the final period, where the Badger sealed his win with another drop.
A similar fate befell Jake Danishek and Devin Skatzka, who both exited the tournament with losses in the consolation round. Danishek nearly came back, but fell short in a 9-6 decision to No. 15 Archie Colgan (Wyoming). Skatzka was neck-and-neck with Jonathan Schleifer (Princeton) before Schleifer sealed the deal with a 5:35 win by fall.

A spot on the All-American podium is still in the cards for Jackson, but he'll have a daunting path through the wrestle-backs to reach the blood round. His next opponent provides a bit of familiarity, however, as Jackson faced Nick Corba (Cleveland State) in the dual season. Jackson took a 7-5 decision over Corba, which at that point was his tightest result of the early season.
