FULLERTON, Calif. – Indiana Softball dropped both games of Friday's Judi Garman Classic, falling to No. 8 Washington, 13-1, and Fresno State, 4-3.
No. 8 Washington 13, Indiana 1
The Huskies used four homers and an eight-run second inning to come away with a 13-1 victory in five frames.
After a fielding error plated the first Washington run in the first, the Huskies strung together nine total hits to push the lead to 9-0 in the following inning. Amirah Milloy homered on a two-run shot, before an RBI single by Casey Stangel made it 4-0. Two batters later, Morganne Flores broke the game open on a grand slam to double the lead. The final Husky run of the inning was an RBI single by Maggie Gallagher.
Two more homers in the third and fourth made it 13-0 off the bats of Taylor Van Zee and Rachel Ogasawara.
Indiana got on the board in the final frame after junior Aimilia McDonough was hit by a pitch and freshman Katie Lacefield walked. After a pop-up and Washington error moved McDonough to third, she scored on an RBI single through the right side by senior Erin Lehman.
Indiana 3, Fresno State 4
In the second game of the day, Indiana took the lead into the sixth before a two-run Bulldog homerun gave Fresno State the 4-3 victory.
The Hoosiers took advantage of free bases early as three walks loaded the bags in the second with two outs. Freshman Gabbi Jenkins cashed in as she hit a bloop single to shallow center, bringing in McDonough. A muffed throw by the Bulldogs also allowed junior Shayna Gamm to score on the play, putting the Hoosiers up, 2-0.
Fresno State tied up the game in the third on a two-out rally. After a single by Morgan Howe put runners on the corners for the Bulldogs, Lindsey Willmon doubled down the right field line on a grounder that was just inside the foul line to bring in both runners.
Indiana quickly responded as senior Kayla Mathewson and Gamm led off the fourth with singles. Lacefield doubled past a leaping Bulldog right fielder to bring Mathewson home and give IU the 3-2 lead.
Trainer retired the next eight batters she saw before a one-out walk to Savannah McHellon in the sixth. The Bulldogs then took the lead on the homer to left by Kierah Willis.
Indiana battled in the final frame, loading the bases on a pair of walks and a double by junior Rachel O'Malley, but a fielder's choice would end the game.
The Hoosiers return to action in the Judi Garman Classic on Saturday as they face South Carolina at 1 p.m. ET. Live stats and a radio broadcast will be available on IUHoosiers.com.
