BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Behind another strong performance in the circle by sophomore Tara Trainer and a walk-off single from junior Rebecca Blitz, Indiana Softball (22-25, 8-9 Big Ten) defeated Maryland (9-33-1, 2-13 Big Ten) on Sunday afternoon, 2-1, to secure a sweep of the Terrapins.
The sweep was the first for the Hoosiers since taking all three games against Iowa last season. Additionally, it marked the second conference series victory for IU since winning two of three from Rutgers earlier this year.
Trainer earned her second complete game victory of the series, striking out eight while allowing just four hits and one walk.
Junior Taylor Uden went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, marking her third straight multi-hit game. Senior Erin Lehman and freshman Gabbi Jenkins also each knocked a pair of hits in the victory.
Indiana went up early on an RBI single by Uden to plate Jenkins, who had reached on a one-out single to the Maryland shortstop.
However, the Hoosier lead would not last long as the Terrapins answered in the second frame with a run. After Anna Kufta led off the inning with a single, she advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Kassidy Cross. A wild pitch moved her to third before another one brought her home to tie the game.
Neither team could move a runner past second base until the fifth when Brigette Nordberg singled, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. However, Trainer forced a long flyout to left to strand the runner.
The Indiana bats' biggest threat to end the stalemate came in the sixth as the Hoosiers loaded the bags on a walk, Maryland error and single by Lehman. However, a popup back to the Terrapin catcher spoiled the opportunity.
Maryland again battled in the top of the eighth, putting two on with two outs on a Hoosier fielding error and a single by Sarah Calta. Maryland pitcher Madison Martin looked to help her own cause as she nearly hit a pinch-hit homer to left, but the ball sailed just foul before she struck out.
Junior Sarah Thompson led off the Hoosier eighth inning with a single to short and was moved to second as a throw to get her out on a bunt from freshman Bella Norton was off the mark. A sacrifice bunt from Lehman moved the runners to second and third before Blitz singled to left center to bring home Thompson and give Indiana the victory.
Indiana returns to action next weekend as the Hoosiers travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. to face the Wolverines in a three-game set. First pitch is scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m.
