Hoosiers Win Seven Events, Break Another School Record
4/29/2017 5:57:00 PM | Track and Field
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – For the third consecutive day a school record fell at the Penn Relays. All three meets that the Hoosiers competed in provided big highlights for the track and field team, including seven total event wins.
The women's track team competed in three relay events at the Penn Relays and broke the school record in each of the three events. Today's broken record came via the 4x800m relay. Kendell Wiles, 2:11.84, was responsible for the leadoff leg. She handed the baton to Olivia Hippensteel, who split a time of 2:07.46 before giving way to Katherine Receveur. The All-American was the third carry and split a time of 2:09.64. Finally, Brenna Calder brought home the school record with a split of 2:07.32. The team's final time of 8:36.25 was good for ninth overall.
The men's 4xMile relay team came up just short of the Oregon Ducks, finishing second with a time of 16:22.48. Cross Country All-American Jason Crist was the leadoff leg for the Hoosiers. His split was 4:07.1. Kyle Mau, the anchor from yesterday's DMR team, was the second leg and split a 4:06.0. Matt Schwartzer, 4:04.2, was the third carry. Joe Murphy, the leadoff leg from the DMR team, split a 4:05.2 as the anchor leg.
William Session was one of nine runners that qualified for the 110m hurdles in Friday's competition. The freshman finished fifth with a time of 14.15 after entering the finals as the fourth seeded runner.
Willie Morrison has a knack for competing at his best when his back is up against the wall. Heading into his last throw at the Longhorn Invitational, the last attempt by any competitor, he trailed a Michigan thrower. He uncorked a throw of 18.76m (61-6.75) to move into first place by over a foot to win the shot put.
Sydney Clute was the only pole vaulter to clear 4.47m (14-8) at the Longhorn Invitational. She attempted to clear 4.57m (15-0), which would have set the school record, but narrowly missed. Ari Nelson set a new personal best in the long jump for the second time this season. She eclipsed her mark at the Louisville Invitational with a leap of 6.30m (20-8). Her mark was good for second place and she moved up one spot on the school record book, climbing to fifth. Paul Galas finished fourth in the high jump with a clearance of 2.11m (6-11). Galas passed on the opening height and cleared the next three heights on his first attempt at each. His first miss came at 2.14m (7-0.25), a height that he was unable to clear.
The Hoosier sprint group left the RedHawk Invitational with five event victories. The biggest highlight came from senior Zach Reitzug, who won the 400m hurdles with a career best mark of 51.41. That time moves him up to the eighth spot in school history in the event. On the women's side, Mackenzie Bollinger and Jeyland Valentin claimed the top two spots. Bollinger's winning time was 1:01.28 and Valentin crossed in 1:02.06. Tyler Bellaire earned the win in the 100m dash with a time of 10.78. Markevious Roach took first in the 400m dash with a time of 48.11. Adrian Mable was the first to cross in the 110m hurdles with a time of 15.00. Kellie Davis, a senior middle distance runner, captured first in the 800m run, finishing with a time of 2:13.41.
The Hoosier track and field team will be back in action in six days at the Billy Hayes Invitational. The meet will signify for the first outdoor meet hosted by IU this season and will be the final regular season meet of the 2017 season.
