BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana baseball (27-19-2, 10-8-1) ran into good starting pitching on Friday night, falling in its series opener to Penn State, 5-2.
Sophomore Jonathan Stiever went seven innings in the loss, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out seven and walking none. Stiever had his streak without allowing a run end at 20 innings.
Junior Logan Sowers put together a two-hit game, while sophomores Luke Miller and Ryan Fineman each drove in a run.
After a scoreless pair of innings for both teams, the Nittany Lions got on the board first in the third inning. Logan Goodnight tripled with one out and then scored on a balk to make it a 1-0 game. Then with two outs in the frame, Conlin Hughes homered to left field to extend the lead to two runs.
With one out in the fourth inning, senior Craig Dedelow worked a walk and then advanced to second on a single by Sowers. Then with two away, Fineman went the other way singling through the left side to plate Dedelow, cutting the PSU lead to 2-1.
The Nittany Lions rebounded in the fifth with a solo home run by Brett Davis to make it a 3-1 game.
Sophomore Matt Lloyd led off the top of the eighth with a double to the left centerfield gap. Things were looking promising for Indiana when the next batter, Miller, singled up the middle to score Lloyd and trim PSU's lead to 3-2. The Nittany Lions made a pitching change and the next three hitters were retired on a strikeout and pair of flyouts.
PSU added two insurance runs with two outs in the top of the ninth to make it a 5-2 game.
