NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Indiana Women's Soccer earned its second straight shutout road win as the Hoosiers defeated Vanderbilt on a rainy Friday evening, 1-0. The game opened competition for IU in the Music City Invitational, hosted by the Commodores.
Sophomore Chandra Davidson netted the gamewinner for the Hoosiers (3-2) in the 59th minute, marking her third goal in the last two games. In net, freshman goalkeeper Bethany Kopel earned her second shutout with six saves.
"We've been talking all week about how difficult it is to win on the road and then tonight we had some extreme conditions with the weather," said head coach Amy Berbary. "But I thought our team handled it really well and stay composed."
The Commodores (3-2) threatened early, earning four corner kicks in the first 12 minutes, but got just one shot off as the Hoosiers cleared the rest out of danger.
Indiana junior Maya Piper nearly put IU on top in the 17th minute, blasting a ball in from 35 yards out. However, Vanderbilt goalkeeper Kaitlyn Fahrner, who finished the game with nine saves, made a diving stop on the ball.
Redshirt junior Annelie Leitner narrowly gave the Hoosiers the lead in the 31st minute as she made a move around the defender to get a shot off near the top of the 18-yard box. The ball, which looked to be headed to the upper left corner, curved just wide to keep the game scoreless.
Vanderbilt outshot the Hoosiers in the first half, 9-6, and posted a 7-1 advantage on corner kicks.
"You have to give it to Vanderbilt, they have a very organized side and a very dangerous attack," said Berbary. "I think they won the better part of the first half, but I give credit to our kids for really listening, helping each other and communicating. They sorted out some of the issues we had in the first half to put together a great 45 minutes and, at the end of the day, put one in the back of the net and got it done."
The Hoosiers came out of the halftime break firing, as Indiana put up eight shots in the second half with six of those being on goal.
Davidson broke the stalemate in the 59th minute as she picked up a service from redshirt junior Mykayla Brown, who crossed it to her right. Davidson was waiting near the top of the six-yard box as she headed it low past Fahrner to make it 1-0.
"Chandra's training habits have improved tremendously dating back to last January," said Berbary. "I think she has really bought in to understanding that you have to train at the highest level. She's proof that it works."
Vanderbilt continued to threaten, putting up seven shots in the second half, but just one was on target for Kopel.
The Hoosiers return to action on Sunday as they face Memphis (4-0) at 1 p.m. ET. The Tigers defeated Rhode Island Friday in the first game of the Music City Invitational, 6-0.
