IUWS Battles to 3-3 Draw at North Texas

DENTON, Texas – Indiana Women's Soccer closed out the non-conference portion of the schedule on Sunday, drawing with North Texas, 3-3. The Hoosiers twice battled from behind in the contest, including scoring with just 52 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime.
"I think you saw the maturity of this group today," said head coach Amy Berbary. "It was an interesting game and they play an interesting style of soccer. I thought we were able to stay composed even though some things didn't go right for us, we played until the last minute to get that goal in the last 52 seconds."
Indiana (4-3-1) saw goals from junior Abby Allen, sophomore Meghan Scott and redshirt junior Mykayla Brown. The teams combined for 53 shots, with 26 of those coming from the Hoosiers.
The Mean Green (4-2-1), who received votes in last week's United Soccer Coaches' poll, struck in the 31st minute as Berklee Peters found Logan Bruffett in the box and she sent it past freshman goalkeeper Bethany Kopel.
However, the Hoosiers didn't have to wait long to equalize as Allen took a throw in and fired it from just outside the right of the 18-yard box. The ball went all the way across the box diagonally, up and over the head of North Texas keeper Brooke Bradley.
Just before half, Indiana grabbed the lead on a free kick score from Scott, her second of the season. After redshirt freshman Kyndal McKinney drew a foul 25 yards out, Scott threaded the ball through traffic to give IU a 2-1 advantage at the break.
Indiana maintained control though much of the second half until the Mean Green tied the game on a goal from Brooke Lampe in the 73rd minute that was initially waved off for being offside. However, after the officials discussed it, it was put back on the scoreboard.
Three minutes later, North Texas grabbed its second lead of the game on a score from Ariel Diaz to make it 3-2.
The Hoosiers continued to press, firing up five shots over the next 10 minutes. With time winding down, junior Maya Piper won the ball around midfield and took it down the right flank. Piper then sent the ball in to a charging Brown, who shot as she was sliding and put the ball in the left bottom corner for her first score of the season.
In the first overtime period, Indiana earned a pair of corners in the first four minutes but were unable to put a shot on target. Neither team put a shot on goal in the final overtime frame as the game ended in the draw.
Kopel collected nine saves in the game, a new high for the Novi, Mich. native.
Indiana, who posted its best non-conference record since 2014, will now turn its attention to Big Ten action as the Hoosiers open up conference play Thursday night at Michigan State.
"The goal in the first eight games of the season was try to play different styles and some teams that offer different challenges to help us grow as we enter the wrath of the Big Ten," said Berbary. "But I think these kids are ready and we go in pretty confident with a record above .500. I don't think we're really going to see anything we haven't seen yet with the amount of different teams we've played in non-conference."
