BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana University Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass announced today that Amanda Janney Misselhorn has decided to step down as the head coach of the IU Field Hockey program. Janney Misselhorn leaves the program after four seasons to pursue new professional opportunities and to focus on her family and health. A search for Janney Misselhorn's replacement has begun.
"We appreciate the significant contributions that Amanda has made to IU Field Hockey and to the many students that she coached," Glass said. "Amanda is a class act and will be a tremendous success in whatever career she chooses. We wish her and her family all the best in their future endeavors."
During her four years in Bloomington, Janney Misselhorn developed and produced the Hoosiers' second-ever All-American first team selection (Kate Barber, 2016), four seniors who have represented Indiana and scored goals in the NFHCA Senior All Star Game, led Indiana to its first winning Big Ten record since 2009, focused on academics her teams earned perfect 1,000 APR scores and graduation rates during her tenure. Janney Misselhorn's program also won the IU Athletics Excellence Academy community service award.
"I want to thank my players, the Alumni, and all the great people in the Athletic Department," Janney Misselhorn said. "I am grateful for the opportunities that I have been given in the Big Ten. It has been a privilege to mentor and coach our athletes. I hope that my coaching and life lessons continue to positively influence these strong, confident women. After coaching for 20 years, I need to focus on my family and my health. At this time, it is best for me and best for the program that I step down."
Assistant coaches Nicole Volgraf and Pim Van Paassen will remain in their roles until a successor is named and determines whether to retain them. Volgraf, a former IU student-athlete, will serve as interim head coach, effective immediately. Senior Associate Athletic Director Kristin Borrelli will otherwise oversee the program until a new head coach is hired. That search will begin immediately and be led by Borrelli with the counsel and support of advisors inside and outside the athletic department, including a student-athlete from the field hockey team.
