Bloomington, Ind. – Perfection is well worth celebrating, and Indiana University Athletics did just that at its recent Academic Excellence Dinner in Bloomington.
IU Athletics recently honored 35 student-athletes who earned perfect 4.0 grade point averages during the spring 2018 semester. The students represented 14 different sports, and were recognized for their academic performances at an evening celebration that also included athletic department administrators, academic advisors, coaches and campus officials.
The event marked IU Athletics' 13th Academic Excellence Dinner, which dates back to 2012. Held twice annually, it is made possible by benefactors Steven and Kathy Shuel, who have generously committed to providing this opportunity each semester to recognize the exemplary academic achievements of IU's student-athletes.
"We are so proud of the accomplishments of these students," said IU Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass. "They have achieved this level of academic success despite having commitments that extend well beyond what most students endure. This speaks to not only their commitment in the classroom, but also the support they receive from their coaches and our academic services staff. We are thrilled to honor them, and thankful to Steve and Kathy Shuel for making this event a reality."
This year's group of honorees include two six-time winners, four four-time winners, four three-time winners, 15 two-time winners and 10 first-time winners. The 35 award recipients brings the total to 224 Hoosier student-athletes who have been honored at the dinner in the last six years.
"I think it is really inspiring to see so many people win this award multiple times and to be surrounded by an overall culture of academic excellence throughout the athletic department," said IU women's soccer player Abby Allen, a four-time winner of the award. "It is so great to see so many athletes succeeding not only in their sport, but also in the classroom.
"Celebrating academic excellence in this fashion just emphasizes how much academics are valued within the athletic department, which means a lot."
Three-time award winner Wyeth Brock, a member of IU's two-time defending Big Ten Champion men's swimming team, echoed Allen's sentiments.
"The fact that IU Athletics takes a night to reward athletes' successes in the classroom is remarkable," Brock said. "IU Athletics really cares about its athletes beyond college, and academic excellence paves the way to many successes later in life. Therefore, rewarding athletes who achieve in academics demonstrates the level of care IU has for its student athletes."
The event is possible thanks to the support of the Shuels, who are long-time supporters of Indiana University and IU Athletics. Steven earned his B.S. in Marketing from the Kelley School of Business in 1974, while Kathy was a 4.0 student while earning her degree at Ohio State. The Shuel's sons, Jon and Michael, are both IU graduates as well.
The Shuels were recently inducted into IU's most prestigious recognition society, the President's Circle, which recognizes individuals who have generously donated to Indiana University.
