Bloomington, Ind. – A pair of Indiana University student-athletes are among a select group of individuals recently inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society. Rowing's Maddie Pierce and Women's Soccer's Maya Piper were among those welcomed to the nation's oldest and largest academic society at an induction ceremony on the IU campus Monday.
Pierce, a senior from Cincinnati, Ohio, is a Speech and Hearing Sciences major who will graduate next spring. After graduation, she plans to pursue a Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology.
"Being inducted to Phi Beta Kappa was a huge honor," Pierce said. "There have been many influential people throughout American history who were Phi Beta Kappa members, so it is very exciting to join such a prestigious organization."
Piper, meanwhile, recently completed her final season of eligibility with the Hoosier women's soccer program. The team's leading scorer as a junior with seven goals and two assists, she led the 2018 team in assists (7) while ranking third in scoring as a senior. She intends to complete her degree in Media from the IU Media School in 2020.
"Being inducted into Phi Beta Kappa was an amazing experience," Piper said. "It is an incredible network of people who have been inducted in the past, and it is an honor to be a 2019 inductee."
Founded in 1776 on the campus of William & Mary, the Phi Beta Kappa Society is one of the nation's most prestigious academic societies. With 286 chapters at U.S. undergraduate institutions, its eligibility requirements include a minimum 3.85 GPA for undergraduates who have completed 75 hours of coursework in the liberal arts and sciences, or a 3.75 GPA for any student who has completed 105 hours of liberal arts and sciences coursework. Its membership includes 17 U.S. Presidents, 39 U.S. Supreme Court Justices, and more than 130 Nobel laureates.
Both Pierce and Piper credit the IU Academic Support staff for their help in making this accomplishment a reality.
"I could not have done it without the help of the IU Athletics Academic support staff," Pierce said. "Angie (Krilich), Allen (Kohn) and Josh (Kemp) have not only helped me with scheduling issues and meeting graduation requirements, but were also there to encourage me and talk me through my most stressful days. I am so thankful that IU Athletics recognizes that we are students before we are athletes, and for the academic support that I received from the department during my undergraduate career."
"The support provided by the IU Athletics staff during my college career has played a huge role in my academic achievements," Piper said. "The (IU Academic Support) staff has challenged the preconceived limits I placed on my own personal growth and accomplishments. They have encouraged me to think critically and push myself academically, while also being a pillar that I could lean on for support and encouragement when I needed it most. I have a lot of respect for the IU Athletic Department and the equal emphasis they place on academics and athletics. I can't thank them enough for their academic support the past four years."
