BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana men's tennis team grabbed a 6-1 victory over Saint Louis following an earlier loss to No. 35 Vanderbilt on Sunday inside the IU Tennis Center.
The first match of the day came down to the wire in both doubles and singles. In a battle for that extra point, the Hoosiers and Commodores found themselves in a 1-1 tie after senior Raheel Manji and sophomore Zac Brodney won 6-2 at three doubles. Vanderbilt edged ahead on the scoreboard with the victory at the two spot.
With a 1-0 lead, Vandy took the first two singles matches and the Hoosiers found themselves down 3-0. Things started going IU's way when they pushed the remaining three matches to a third set. At the five spot, Brodney got the Hoosiers on the board with a 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 win. Indiana followed up the win with another three-set victory as Manji knocked off No. 52 Daniel Valent 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
Trailing 3-2, the Hoosiers battled in three-set matchups at the fourth and third spot but dropped them both.
In the afternoon match, the Hoosiers responded with a 6-1 over Saint Louis. Doubles went the Hoosiers way as the duos of Manji/Brodney and sophomore Payam Ahmadi/freshman Andrew Redding came up with victories.
Redding also provided Indiana with its second tally after a Bilikens player retired due to injury following a 6-0 first set win by Redding.
For the second time today, Brodney took a singles match, this time winning 6-1, 6-1 at the two spot. Two of the next three matches also went the Hoosiers way as Salgado, Lam and sophomore William Piekarsky wrapped up the IU triumph.
Next week, the Hoosiers will host another doubleheader in Bloomington. On Friday, March 2, IU plays Marquette at Noon and Drake at 6 p.m. During the Drake match, free pizza will be provided.
