BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Softball opened up play at Andy Mohr Field by sweeping day one of the Hoosier Classic, defeating UIC, 5-3, before taking down Green Bay in the final game of the day, 4-3.
Indiana 5, UIC 3
The first game of the day saw 2-for-3 outings by junior Sarah Galovich and sophomore Katie Lacefield, who also added a pair of RBI. Senior Rebecca Blitz stole a pair of bases while freshman Mykayla Ferrari swiped three as the Hoosiers tied their season high with five total stolen bases. In the circle, junior Tara Trainer earned the win as she went 6.1 innings, allowing three runs and striking out six.
"It was Tara and our base running that got the job done for us," said head coach Shonda Stanton, who was coaching in her first career game at Andy Mohr Field. "We were extremely aggressive in wanting that next 60 feet and that paid off."
After a quiet first two innings, Indiana struck in the third frame, plating three runs. After Blitz walked, she stole both second and third base to get in position for sophomore Gabbi Jenkins, who sent an RBI single to third base. After freshman Maddie Westmoreland singled and senior Taylor Uden was hit by a pitch to load the bases, an RBI groundout from Galovich brought in Jenkins. The final Hoosier run of the frame came off the bat of Lacefield, who singled up the middle to score Uden.
Indiana added a run in the following inning as Blitz send an RBI groundout back to the pitcher to plate Ferrari, who had reached on a fielder's choice.
Another insurance run came for IU in the fifth as Lacefield's single up the middle plated Galovich, who sent a two-out double to right to get on base.
"It was nice to see us producing with two outs and those two teaming up for back-to-back clutch hits," said Stanton.
The Flames got on the board in the sixth on a two-run double by Skylee James to score Taylor Cairns. UIC followed that up with a two-out single by Kayla Wedl to bring in Cassie Kaelber.
Indiana 4, Green Bay 3
The nightcap was highlighted by a strong outing in the circle from senior Emily Kirk, who went 5.0 scoreless innings, and a 2-for-2 day at the plate by senior Rachel O'Malley, who knocked a two-run homer.
Kirk allowed just three hits and struck out three as she collected her first win of the season.
"She gave us a great start and set us up to be successful today," said Stanton. "She was strong throughout her entire outing and that was huge."
Offensively, Indiana put up its first run in the second on an RBI single from O'Malley to bring home Uden, who reached on a one-out walk. O'Malley further extend the lead in the fourth as she knocked a two-run homer to centerfield, plating Lacefield. It marked the first homer of the season for O'Malley, who reached base three times against Green Bay.
"O'Malley had a great all-around day," said Stanton. "She was solid defensively and made some plays then stepped up at the plate. We've been talking all year about cataloguing moments and each kid is starting to see moments within themselves while doing something great. We're building on those moments and I thought today we put it together."
After freshman Taylor Lambert walked then advanced to second on a wild pitch, Jenkins brought her in on a single up the middle to extend IU's lead to 4-0 in the fourth.
A three-run sixth-inning home run by Green Bay's Jaclyn Delagrange trimmed the Hoosier lead to 4-3 before Trainer stepped in to earn the save in the seventh inning.
Indiana returns to action on Saturday as the Hoosiers play Northwestern at 3 p.m. Admission to all home games is free of charge.
