Indiana Rowing Battles No. 6 Michigan, Michigan State To The End At Big Ten Double Dual
4/7/2018 5:25:00 PM | Women's Rowing
BELLEVILLE, Michigan – The Indiana rowing team traveled north on Saturday to take on No. 6 Michigan and Michigan State at Belleville Lake in a Big Ten Double Dual. At the end of two sessions of racing, it was Wolverines and Spartans that were able to top the Hoosiers in their respective duals.
In the morning, the final race of the session featured the first varsity 8 from both schools. Although the Hoosiers have closed the gap in recent years in this event, it was Michigan that was able to hang out down the stretch and beat the Hoosiers by just less than two seconds. Then in the afternoon against Michigan State, the Hoosiers were not able to get on track, as their time of 6:30.11 was just under two seconds behind MSU.
The 1V4 was also neck-and-neck with Michigan in the morning session, but ended up finishing second with a time of 7:11.61, just two seconds behind the Wolverines. Then in the afternoon, the Hoosiers finished first with open water between them and Michigan State in second place by posting a time of 7:24.30.
The second varsity 8 dropped both of their races on Saturday, falling to Michigan with a time of 6:44.54 in the morning and then trailing Michigan State with a time of 6:36.93.
For the second varsity 4, they trimmed five seconds off their time from the morning to the afternoon, going from 7:49.48 in a loss to Michigan to 7:44.48 in a narrow loss to Michigan State.
Indiana also had a third varsity 4 that was competing this weekend and they opened with a time of 7:54.41 to trail Michigan's time of 7:38.8. Their time of 7:57.05 in the afternoon was not good enough to top Michigan State's time of 7:42.80.
Both novice crews also made the trip to Michigan, with many getting their first collegiate racing experience. The first novice 8 made it down the course in a time of 7:14.05 to finish behind Michigan and their time of 6:51.65. Then against Michigan State, the Hoosiers crossed the line in 7:31.46 and finished second to Michigan State.
And the second novice 8 lost to Michigan in the morning by 35 seconds but improved in the afternoon by a second and finished just 16 seconds behind Michigan State.
The Hoosiers will be back on the water next weekend at the Clemson Invitational, where races will take place on Friday and Saturday (April 14-15).
