BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Women's Soccer (1-0) continues its start to the 2018 campaign this week as the Hoosiers head south. IU will face Georgia on Friday evening before visiting Clemson on Sunday afternoon. The contest with the Bulldogs will be broadcast live on SEC Network, while Sunday's game at Clemson will be streamed on ACC Network Extra. Both games will be home openers for the opposition.
Friday's game against the Bulldogs marks the first of four straight road games for the Hoosiers.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
This week's match will be the first time IU head coach Amy Berbary will face her alma mater while at the helm of the Hoosiers. Berbary coached against her former team previously as an assistant with Auburn. Berbary played for Georgia from 1998-2001 and remains fifth in program history with 26 goals scored and tied for eighth with 58 career points. The game also marks the first-ever clash for Indiana and Georgia in program history.
The Bulldogs are 1-1 on the young season after falling to No. 22 Georgetown in the opener, 1-0, and defeating San Diego on Sunday, 1-0. In 2017, Georgia went 4-12-2 and returns 15 letterwinners while bringing in 14 newcomers. The youthful Bulldogs tout 11 freshmen and 11 sophomores, including Reagan Glisson who scored the gamewinner on Sunday. Glisson, along with Sydney Shultis, Kayla Bruster and Caroline Chipman were all tabbed for the SEC Preseason Watch List. Freshman goalkeeper Emory Wegener played every minute of the weekend, collecting 11 saves and a 0.50 goals against average.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
The Hoosiers will visit Clemson on Sunday to face a team coming off its fourth-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers went 10-5-4 a season ago and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Second Round. Last weekend, Clemson went 1-1 as the Tigers defeated Oregon State before falling to Oregon. Clemson will travel to South Carolina Thursday night before facing the Hoosiers Sunday. Senior Sam Staab, a member of the US U-23 Women's National Team, was named to the Preseason All-ACC Team. The biggest offensive threat returning is Mariana Speckmaier, who scored seven goals and added two assists last season. In goal, sophomore Maddie Weber played every minute of opening weekend and collected a pair of saves.
This is the second time IU and Clemson have faced off as the teams met last year in Bloomington. The Tigers used a 32nd minute goal to come away with a 1-0 victory.
LAST TIME OUT
• The Hoosiers opened the 2018 season last weekend at Armstrong Stadium. Persistent rainy weather caused a cancellation of Friday's game against Wake Forest. IU defeated Miami on Sunday, 3-0, with all three goals coming in the opening half.
• Senior Abby Allen paced the IU offense against the RedHawks as she collected an assist on redshirt senior Annelie Leitner's goal before scoring one of her own just three minutes later.
• Sophomore Grace Geise netted her first career goal on Sunday. Geise, who played 10 games last season before an injury cut her year short, scored just 96 seconds after checking into the game.
• Six Hoosiers played their first career game in an Indiana uniform on Sunday - graduate transfer Claudia Day, sophomores Maddie West, Nicolette Kapsalis and Ana Garibaldi and freshmen Maddie Essick and Madeline Carlson.
• Allen, along with sophomores Bethany Kopel and Hanna Németh were named to the Hoosier Challenge Cup All-Tournament Team.
WHAT'S AHEAD IN 2018?
The 2018 schedule features five games against 2017 NCAA Tournament participants and six that finished in the top 50 of the final RPI of the year. Eight of this year's opponents were ranked or received votes in this week's United Soccer Coaches Rankings.
Indiana continues its four-game road swing next weekend as the Hoosiers visit Pepperdine and LMU. IU will round out the non-conference schedule at home against Kentucky (Sept. 7) and Kansas State (Sept. 9).
Big Ten play for Indiana opens Sept. 13 against Michigan. Other home conference battles include Michigan State, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Penn State. The Hoosiers will face Nebraska, Iowa, Purdue, Northwestern, Illinois and Maryland on the road.
