MALIBU, Calif. – Indiana Women's Soccer captured its first road win of the young season as the Hoosiers defeated Pepperdine on Friday evening, 2-1. Redshirt seniors Mykayla Brown and Annelie Leitner found the back of the net for the Hoosiers.
KEY MOMENTS
• After senior Justine Lynn was fouled 10 yards past midfield in the 26th minute, sophomore Hanna Németh took the free kick for the Hoosiers. She sent the ball into the box, finding the head of Brown, who headed it down and inside the far post from seven yards out. It was her first goal of the season.
• The Waves would find the equalizer just 1:42 later after Brie Welch picked up the ball and scored after a shuffle in the box following a corner kick.
• Leitner netted her second game-winning goal of the season in the 66th minute on another IU free kick. After the Waves were whistled for a foul 40 yards out, graduate transfer Claudia Day served the ball into the box. It found the head of redshirt sophomore Allison Jorden who sent it forward to a waiting Leitner, who brought it down and scored from the top of the six-yard box.
• Sophomore goalkeeper Bethany Kopel had four saves, none bigger than in the 79th minute as she made a stop on a charging Welch as she fired from just inside the box. Kopel dived to her left to make the save and keep the IU lead intact.
NOTABLES
• Indiana improved to 2-1-1 on the year, while Pepperdine, who received votes in this week's United Soccer Coaches' rankings, fell to 1-4-0.
• Pepperdine outshot the Hoosiers, 18-13, but IU held a 7-5 advantage in the second half.
• Seniors Abby Allen and Maya Piper, along with junior Chandra Davidson led Indiana in shots with three apiece.
• Allen saw her goal-scoring streak end at end three games.
• Day's assist on Leitner's goal was her first point as a Hoosier. Day had five points during her time at Wake Forest.
QUOTABLE
"It wasn't the prettiest game; it was more of a physical match. So, we tried to out-fight them, especially in the second half. As a team, we just stuck together and this game just shows how much we play as a family, how we play together and how good our chemistry is and we just need to continue to build off that."
-- Redshirt senior Annelie Leitner
"We did an incredible job of pressing them and trying to get the attack to earn some free kicks. We scored off two set pieces today and that's something we've been trying to work on in training and capitalize on. We have an incredible ability in the air and we hadn't really reaped the benefits of that. I'm just proud of the fight and the grit in the box to hammer those home. On the other end, we called on them to step up our team defense, we worked on it all week and they stepped up and executed in this game. I think down the line this is going to be a huge win for us."
