TEAM
• Indiana has won 13 of its last 15 season openers and Tom Allen claimed his first victory in a season opener (1-1).
• IU has won 12 of its last 13 regular season non-conference games, including four straight overall and five consecutive on the road.
• The Hoosiers have won four straight road openers and Allen is 2-0 in starts away from home.
• Indiana is 3-0 all-time against Florida International, with a pair of wins in Miami.
• Senior safety Jonathan Crawford, fifth-year senior offensive lineman Wes Martin, senior defensive lineman Jacob Robinson and fifth-year senior wide receiver Luke Timian served as tonight's game captains.
• IU won the coin toss and elected to defer.
• The Hoosiers wore a helmet decal to honor Bill Mallory, the program's all-time winningest coach, who passed away in Bloomington on May 25, 2018.
DEFENSE
• Jonathan Crawford opened his 2018 campaign in a big way. The senior safety accounted for two takeaways in the first quarter, his fifth career multi-takeaway game. He forced a fumble, the third of his career, on FIU's opening drive and posted his first career pick-6 two drives later in the opening quarter.
• Crawford added three tackles. The Largo, Fla., native moved into a share of eighth on Indiana's career lists with nine interceptions. He has a hand in a team-leading 17 takeaways (9 INTs, 5 fumble recoveries, 3 forced fumbles).
• The interception return for a TD was the program's first since its last visit to Florida International on Sept. 1, 2016. Rashard Fant (34 yards) and Tegray Scales (16) each reached the end zone.
• True freshman safety Devon Matthews recovered Crawford's forced fumble.
• Redshirt sophomore defensive tackle Jerome Johnson picked up his second career sack in the third quarter. Johnson got credit for a forced fumble, which FIU recovered, and ended the evening with four tackles.
• Fifth-year senior defensive end Nile Sykes netted the team's third takeaway when he recovered a fumble in the second quarter, the second of his career.
• Tonight marked the seventh time in Tom Allen's tenure as defensive coordinator that the Hoosiers recorded at least three takeaways (2016 – 4, 2017 – 2, 2018 – 1).
• In his first career start, redshirt junior defensive end Gavin Everett posted a pair of tackles for loss and four stops overall.
• Fifth-year senior linebacker Dameon Willis Jr. topped Indiana with six tackles.
• Fifth-year senior defensive tackle Ja'merez Bowen, redshirt junior defensive end Gavin Everett, redshirt junior linebacker Reakwon Jones and junior safety Khalil Bryant earned their first career starts on defense.
OFFENSE
• In his fifth career start, redshirt sophomore Peyton Ramsey completed 20-of-27 for 156 yards and matched a career-high with three touchdowns. Ramsey added 36 yards on the ground.
• True freshman Michael Penix Jr. took over under center in the third quarter. He became the fifth true freshman quarterback in program history to play (Tim Clifford – 1977, Tre Roberson – 2011, Nate Sudfeld – 2012, Zander Diamont – 2014).
• Penix promptly led the Hoosiers on an 8-play, 72-yard scoring drive, culminating with a 9-yard touchdown pass to senior running back Mike Majette. The Tampa, Fla., native led the team to a field goal and his second drive and finished 8-of-10 for 96 yards.
• The TD grab was the second of Majette's career.
• Redshirt junior wide receiver Donavan Hale collected his first career two-touchdown game. He was the first Hoosier to reach the end zone in 2018, pulling in an 18-yard pass in the opening stanza, and added a 2-yarder in the second. Hale has four career scores and paced IU with 60 yards on four receptions.
• Redshirt freshman tight end Peyton Hendershot recorded his first career touchdown and his first career catch, from 3 yards out, to extend IU's lead to 21-7 in the second quarter.
• Sophomore wideout Ty Fryfogle finished with a career-high 5 receptions for a career-best 33 yards.
• True freshman Reese Taylor saw time on both sides of the ball. He rushed three times for 40 yards, caught two passes for 12 yards and made two tackles at cornerback.
• True freshman Stevie Scott led the way with 70 yards on 20 attempts.
• Fifth-year senior Luke Timian (50 yards) finished with a game-high six catches and redshirt junior Nick Westbrook (33 yards) added five grabs.
• IU had seven players rush the ball, totaling 213 yards (4.5 per rush)
• The Hoosiers had 10 players with receptions, tallying up 252 yards (9.0 per reception)
• Sophomore wide receiver Whop Philyor and redshirt freshman tight end Peyton Hendershot earned their first career starts on offense.
SPECIAL TEAMS
• Redshirt junior kicker Logan Justus connected on his first career field goal attempt, from 36 yards, to give Indiana a 38-21 margin.
• Redshirt sophomore Jared Smolar recorded four touchbacks on his seven kickoffs.
