
Hoosiers Wrap Up Competition at UCSB Winter Invite

Santa Barbara, Calif. – The Indiana University water polo team put the finishing touch on their first weekend in the pool of the 2019 season, completing their second round of matches om Sunday.
The Hoosiers started the morning with a back and forth battle against Fresno St. before meeting their biggest competition yet, No. 1 USC. Indiana was unable to pull off a win during either match-up, closing out the UCSB Winter Invite weekend with a 1-3 record.
Freshman Tina Doherty cleaned up this weekend and started her collegiate career on a high note leading the team in scoring with a totaled six goals. Doherty added three steals and a field block under her belt giving the Hoosiers a defensive edge that will only become fiercer as the season progresses.
Fresno State 12, No. 13 Indiana 7
The Hoosiers quickly took the lead over Fresno St., scoring three goals in the first quarter, but fell into a dry spell during the second giving the Bulldogs a chance to pull away. Indiana entered the half at a three-point deficit and was unable to close the gap during the remainder of the game.
Doherty took control of the pool scoring five of the Hoosiers seven goals. Juli Hilovsky and Emily Powell each found the net once adding two more goals to Doherty's offensive attack.
Powell joined Carlie Crumbaugh and Megan Abarta in a trio of field blocks, defending the net from the Bulldogs quick shot attempts. Gillian Gatecliff and Hannah Falls-Hand managed to swipe a steal each, helping the Hoosiers maintain a strong presence in the pool.
No. 1 USC 11, No. 13 Indiana 1
The Trojans proved to be a tough test for the Hoosiers forcing them to leave everything they had in the pool. Indiana worked hard to create scoring opportunities, but couldn't find much space past USC's defensive lineup.
The Hoosiers managed to swipe a season high eight steals from the Trojans, pushing them further away from the net. Crumbaugh and Izzy Mandema contributed two each, while Mandema added a field block to go with it. Freshman Hannah Falls-Hand threw in the second field block of the game, giving Indiana a totaled 11 blocks from the weekend.
The Hoosiers will have the opportunity to redeem themselves against USC in a rematch game on Feb. 16 in Los Angeles, Calif.

The Hoosiers will have two weeks to sharpen up their defense as well as plan their offensive attacks before returning to California for the 2019 Stanford Invitational. The weekend marks the first MPSF conference match up for Indiana as they take on tournament host No. 2 Stanford.
