Hoosiers Head West for Stanford Invite
2/1/2019 3:14:00 PM | Women's Water Polo
Bloomington, Ind. – Indiana's water polo team heads west this weekend to embark on their second tournament of the 2019 season at the Stanford Invite, hosted by the Stanford Cardinal. The Hoosiers will be put to the test during the two-day long event, facing three top-25 contenders as well as facing China's international team during an exhibition game.
The clash against No. 4 California will kick off the Hoosiers weekend of challenges before they open up the first of MPSF conference play in a face off against No. 2 Stanford. Indiana aims for an upset during these two match-ups as both California and Stanford hold a solid 3-0 record.
Leading the Pack
Taking control of the offensive attack are freshmen Tina Doherty and Izzy Mandema. Playing as seasoned professionals, both Doherty and Mandema led the Hoosiers in scoring earning six goals each in their debut weekend at the UCSB Winter Invite just two weeks ago.
The power duo not only maintained a strong offense, but also showed their defensive dominance during the weekend without missing a step. The two grabbed a combined five steals, three field blocks and an astounding 22 drawn exclusions proving that the Hoosiers extensive freshman class is a force to be reckoned with.
Embracing the Fundamentals
With such a young team, Indiana plans to keep up with their opponents by implementing the basics and dominating the fundamentals. What the Hoosiers lack in experience, they make up for in their training and quick turn arounds.
The Hoosiers look to see how quickly they can adapt to mistakes during this weekend's tenure and make changes accordingly that result in a positive outcome.
A Battle for Control
This weekend, Indiana and UC Davis will meet for the 11thtime in a back and forth battle for control. The Hoosiers and the Aggies have an even series split with a 5-5 record. Since their first meeting in 1999, the two have alternated wins with the Hoosiers bringing home the most recent victory during last season's 8-5 win.
One team will pull away taking the all-time series lead during this weekend's match up, and the Hoosiers plan on being the one to do so.
Hoosiers Homecoming
Although the Hoosiers will be on the road this weekend, two players will look to the crowd for a few familiar faces. Freshmen Mary Askew (Fremont) and Izzy Mandema (Atherton) will be within 30 minutes of their home cities, making their first appearances within close proximity of friends and family.
The Hoosiers hope to take this home crowd as an advantage, using the encouragement from their fellow supports to boost their enthusiasm during their games.
