
Hoosiers Close Out Day One at Stanford Invite

Stanford, Calif. – The Hoosiers began their west coast return with two hard fought losses in the first leg of a two-day weekend at the 2019 Stanford Invite. No. 19 Indiana (1-5) opened Saturday with a strong defensive stand against No. 4 California (5-0) before facing No. 2 Stanford (5-0) in their first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference game.
Indiana relied heavily on their defensive line during the first two games of the weekend, putting up a combined 20 drawn exclusions, 15 steals and six field blocks. Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Greeven held her place in the net contributing a totaled 13 saves, nine against Cal and four against Stanford.
No. 4 California 16, No. 19 Indiana 7
Freshman Tina Doherty led the team offensively against the Bears, scoring three of the Hoosiers seven goals. Attacker Megan Abarta found the net twice as well as tossing two assists, while Juli Hilovky and Lauren Etnyre contributed one more goal apiece.
Greeven took control of the net grabbing a season high nine saves along with swiping a steal, showing the team's defensive dominance in the pool. Izzy Mandema and Abarta added to Greeven's success by drawing out three exclusions each, while Hilovky and Doherty contributed another four for a 2019 single-game team high of 12 drawn exclusions.
No. 2 Stanford 25, No. 19 Indiana 4
Indiana put up a tough fight during their first MPSF conference game against tournament hosts No. 2 Stanford, but unfortunately fell behind in the first half and were unable to work their way back.
Junior Emily Powell scored the Hoosiers first two goals while Gillian Gatecliff and Abarta threw in another two during the first half. Indiana was unable to convert during the second, giving The Cardinal the opportunity to pull away.
Mandema tallied four of the Hoosiers eight drawn exclusions while grabbing another two field blocks. Abarta contributed two steals along with one from Hilovky, Powell and Doherty for a weekend total of 15 steals.

Indiana begins their second day of the Stanford Invite facing China's international team in an exhibition opener before taking on No. 13 UC Davis at Avery Stadium. With a 5-5 all-time series split, the Hoosiers will battle the Aggies for the lead during their 11thmeeting tomorrow afternoon.
Sunday's double will close out the invite weekend for the Hoosiers.The team returns to California Feb. 16 for redemption against No. 1 USC during their second MPSF conference matchup of the season.
