No. 6 Indiana Suffers First Big Ten, Regular-Season Loss Since 2015
10/18/2019 10:15:00 PM | Men's Soccer
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 6 Indiana men's soccer team (8-2-3, 4-1-0 Big Ten) was shutout by the No. 25 Maryland Terrapins (7-4-2, 2-1-2 Big Ten) by a score of 3-0 at Ludwig Field on Friday night.
The loss was the first regular-season, Big Ten Conference loss since the Hoosiers fell to Ohio State, 1-0, in overtime on Oct. 10, 2015.
KEY MOMENTS
• Maryland found the scoreboard for the first time in the 15th minute of action. Terrapin freshman David Kovacic capitalized on a chaotic 18-yard box. After the first UM shot was deflected, Kovacic snuck behind the defense and netted a sliding goal from right in front of the net.
• A defensive breakdown from the Hoosiers in the 28th minute led to the second tally for the home team. Junior Eric Matzelevich found himself wide open just inside the 18-yard box and easily slotted home the score inside the right post of the goal.
• In the 29th minute, Maryland added a third goal off a set piece. Senior Johannes Bergmann flicked on a header beyond the Indiana keeper to give Maryland a 3-0 in the first half.
NOTABLES
• The Indiana loss snaps the team's 32-match regular-season, Big Ten Conference unbeaten streak. Indiana had posted a record of 23-0-9 in the previous 32 matches.
• IU's last league loss in the regular season came on Oct. 10, 2015 in overtime at Ohio State, 1-0.
• The three-goal loss is the largest defeat in conference play for the Hoosiers since being topped 4-1 against Rutgers on Sept. 20, 2015.
• Indiana outshot Maryland by a count of 10-8, however, none of the Hoosier shots were sent on frame. The Terrapins converted seven-of-eight shots on goal with three finding the netting.
• For the first time during the 2019 season, Indiana committed more fouls than the opposition. IU recorded 10 fouls, while UM committed eight.
