
Hoosiers Fall Late in Conference Matchup Against the Sun Devils

Tempe, Ariz. – The No. 22-ranked Indiana water polo team traveled to Arizona this morning ready for a weekend full of conference play. The Hoosiers kicked off their two-game endeavor on Friday with a hard-fought game against No. 8 Arizona, but fell short in the second half losing the game 5-10.

The first half of the game against the Sun Devils began with an intense defensive battle as both teams struggling to find the net offensively. ASU quickly took control though, collecting one goal in the first quarter before tossing in another during the second.
Freshman Izzy Mandema finally put the Hoosiers on the board scoring Indiana's first goal with just 1:39 left in the first half. Attacker Tina Doherty contributed to Mandema's efforts in the third quarter collecting the team's second goal, however ASU took off in the third putting up four more points while holding Indiana scoreless.
The Hoosiers fought back during the final quarter of action collecting three of the team's five goals from three different attackers. Indiana's late rally helped keep the Hoosiers presence in the pool, but in the end it wasn't enough to catch ASU.
On the defensive end, goalkeeper Mary Askew registered nine saves for a season total of 40. The Hoosiers also tallied a team total of eight steals with two apiece from Askew and Doherty. Junior Emily Powell drew out two exclusions against the Sun Devils with Juli Hilovsky and Doherty each grabbing another.
