Berkeley, CA. – The Indiana University water polo team took on their final weekend of regular season conference play with a pair of top-25 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matchups in California. The Hoosiers dropped their first game of the weekend 8-6 to No. 21 San Jose St. on Saturday before falling 17-5 in their second round of action against No. 4 California on Sunday.
No. 21 San Jose St. 8, Indiana 6
San Jose St. got off to a fast start as they collected the first two goals of the game within the first four minutes of action. However, the Hoosiers were quick to bounce back as they followed with four back to back goals right after.
Junior Megan Abarta led the team in scoring finding the net twice within two minutes for the Hoosier's first two goals. Sophomore Carlie Crumbaugh assisted with Abarta's efforts tacking on another goal for the Hoosiers before Abarta found the back of the net again collecting a hat trick. With 35 seconds left in the first half, Abarta tossed in her fourth and final goal of the game. Indiana entered halftime with a 5-3 advantage.
The Hoosiers started to lose their offensive groove during the third quarter as the Spartans collected four more goals. Freshman Izzy Mandema registered one last point for the Hoosiers with 15 seconds left in the third before San Jose St. closed out the final quarter of action with an 8-6 victory over Indiana.
On the defensive end, Indiana tallied four steals from four different Hoosiers while goalkeeper Mary Askew grabbed 12 saves against the Spartans.
No. 4 California 17, Indiana 5
The Bears proved to be a tough battle for the Hoosiers once again as they outscored Indiana 17-5. Cal showed their offensive dominance within the first quarter, collecting six of their points.
Freshman Tina Doherty and Abarta finally put the Hoosiers on the board during the second quarter, grabbing one goal apiece while the Bears grabbed another four. The two teams entered the second half with a 10-2 score.
Abarta went on to find junior Gillian Gatecliff for the assist in the Hoosiers third goal of the game. Indiana looked to rally during the fourth as they grabbed two more goals, another from Doherty and one from sophomore Juli Hilovsky.
Defensively, the Hoosiers registered five steals with three from Doherty, while drawing out six exclusions and one field block. In the end, the Hoosiers late efforts weren't enough to catch the Bears.
