3/7/2019 11:35:00 PM | Women's Water Polo
Bloomington, Ind. – The Indiana University water polo team set out on a mission during tonight's 23-2 victory over Wittenberg. With five Hoosiers sitting out due to injuries and illnesses, Indiana entered the pool with only nine athletes on the roster. However, this did not stop the Hoosiers from dominating on both ends of the pool. Season highs were set, records were broken and new challenges were endured leaving the Hoosiers with their strongest game of the season.
Indiana registered a team total of 21 assists, the fourth highest in Hoosier history with five from Mary Askew, four from Emily Powell and three apiece from Izzy Mandema and Molly McGuire. McGuire also achieved a personal best of seven assists landing third on Indiana's all-time record of assists in a single game.
Three different Hoosiers went on to collect hat tricks throughout the game with Tina Doherty and Hannah Falls-Hand scoring six goals apiece. Doherty and Falls-Hand grabbed the number two spot on the Hoosiers all-time record list for goals scored in a single game. The Hoosiers went on to set a team season high of 20 steals as well.

Indiana took Wittenberg by storm, tying their all-time season high of 23 goals in a single game. Falls-Hand started the Hoosiers off strong finding the back of the net just one minute after the start of the game. Four other Hoosiers also scored during the first quarter before Falls-Hand tossed in another two goals to collect the first hat trick of the game.
Indiana entered the second quarter with a seven-point lead, but Wittenberg quickly put themselves up on the board scoring their only two goals of the game within two minutes of one another. Doherty and sophomore Carlie Crumbaugh tossed in two back to back goals apiece, collecting the next two hat tricks for the Hoosiers. McGuire closed out the first half finding the net two more times with assists from Doherty and Mandema.
As yet another injury swept across the Hoosiers, freshman Izzy Mandema was taken out of the line of action leaving it up to goalkeeper Mary Askew to step in during Indiana's time of need. After standing her ground in the net during the second quarter, Askew entered new territory acting as a field player for the Hoosiers.
Askew's role as a utility player served her well as she collected her first goal of the season on a power play attack against the Tigers. Doherty tallied another two goals during the third quarter while McGuire and Falls-Hand contributed two assists to the Hoosiers offensive efforts.
Indiana finished the final quarter of action registering six more goals to close out the game. Crumbaugh tallied another two while Doherty and Falls-Hand added three more apiece. McGuire also registered another three assists for a season total of 14.
The Hoosiers faced the Tigers for the first time in program history, setting the bar high for years to come.
