
Hoosiers Close Out Regular Season with a Victory Over Bearcats, 14-4

Bloomington, Ind. - The Indiana University women's water polo team wrapped up the 2019 regular season with a final victory as they defeated McKendree University 14-4 during this weekend's outing.

Indiana (5-15, 0-6) began today's matchup on a high note, collecting the first four goals of the game. Freshman Izzy Mandema sparked the Hoosiers offensive surge grabbing her first goal of the day before junior Megan Abarta tossed in the team's second off a five-meter penalty shot.
Seconds later freshman Tina Doherty found sophomore Juli Hilovsky, to toss in another goal for the Hoosiers. Abarta went on to find Doherty to round off Indiana's four goal attack. McKendree (11-13, 1-2) responded with two back to back goals before Mandema grabbed her second goal of the game during a 5-on-6 powerplay.
In the second quarter of action, Hilovsky and Doherty each registered another goal while McKendree's Emily Westlove found the back of the net for the Bearcats third goal of the game. The Hoosiers ended the first half with a five-point advantage and entered the halftime break with a 7-3 lead.
The third quarter opened up with Hilovsky completing a hat trick as she tallied another five-meter penalty goal for the Hoosiers. Junior Emily Powell joined the offensive efforts with a goal of her own before McKendree grabbed their fourth and final goal of the game with 30 seconds left in the third.
Sophomore Carlie Crumbaugh stepped up during the final quarter of action, registering two back to back goals with an assist by Doherty on the second. Doherty tossed yet another assist to Powell before freshman Molly McGuire did the same as Powell collected her second and third goal.
Junior Gillian Gatecliff finished the game with one final goal coming off an assist from freshman Lauren Etnyre. Goalkeeper Sarah Greeven tallied two saves during the first half for a season total of 93, while freshman Mary Askew grabbed another three during the second half for a season total of 68.
Indiana had a combined 10 steals with three from Doherty, two from Abarta and one a piece from five other Hoosiers contributing to IU's victory.

The Hoosiers travel to Stanford, CA next weekend to compete in the 2019 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Conference Tournament. Indiana will first face the No. 2 seed on Friday, Apr. 26 at 2:00 pm ET. Both teams will then go on to play Saturday, Apr. 27 for the second round of action.
This upcoming weekend's endeavors will mark Indiana's first MPSF conference tournament play in program history as well as their final weekend of action for the 2019 season.
