BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – A record total of 117 IU students who participate in intercollegiate athletics across 10 spring sports earned Academic All-Big Ten recognition, the Big Ten Conference announced Wednesday. The 117 honorees bring the combined total for the 2018-19 academic year to 279 Academic All-Big Ten honors for Indiana. That total represents a record amount for IU for a single academic year.

The Hoosiers have been strong in the classroom as they have increased the total number of honors from 240 in the 2016-17 year to 256 in the 2017-18 year to now 279 in the 2018-19 academic year.

"To establish a new school record for Academic All-Big Ten honors for a second consecutive year is a wonderful accomplishment and a great source of pride for our entire department," said IU Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass. "I congratulate our 117 spring Academic All-Big Ten recipients for their tremendous efforts and commitment in the classroom. We are extremely proud of all of our 2018-19 honorees for once again raising the bar for academic success at IU."

To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be enrolled full-time at the institution for a minimum of 12 months and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
The conference office also awards Academic All-Big Ten distinction in the spring seasons and will present the Distinguished Scholar Award at the end of the academic year.
Big Ten Faculty Representatives established the Distinguished Scholar Award in 2008 to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program. Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must be a recipient of Academic All-Big Ten recognition in the previous academic year, must have been enrolled full-time at the institution for the entire previous academic year (two semesters or three quarters) and earned a minimum GPA of 3.70 or better during the previous academic year, excluding any summer grades. The Academic All-Big Ten threshold is a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for a student's academic career.
