Hoosiers Clinch Series Against Penn State with Saturday Sweep

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Indiana Softball clinched the series against Penn State on Saturday as the Hoosiers took both games at Beard Field, 2-0 and 5-2.
Game One: Indiana 2, Penn State 0
KEY MOMENTS
• After a quiet start for both team's offenses, Penn State got its first hit of the game on a one-out double in the fourth by Destiny Weber. Another double off the bat of Ally Kurland threatened to break the stalemate as pinch runner Christa Wagner attempted to come all the way home from second, but leftfielder Tete Hart connected with catcher Bella Norton to get her out at the plate.
• Norton drew a walk with one away in the fifth before a single by senior Sarah Galovich put two on with two away, but a strikeout stranded the runners.
• The Hoosiers broke through in the sixth after a bunt single by sophomore Taylor Lambert, hit by pitch to sophomore Maddie Westmoreland and full-count walk to junior Katie Lacefield loaded the bases with two outs. Norton drew a four-pitch walk to plate Lambert before sophomore Annika Baez sent a single right back up the middle to plate Westmoreland make it 2-0.
• Penn State threatened in the final frame as the Nittany Lions drew a pair of one-out walks. But senior Tara Trainer sent the next two down on a strikeout and groundout to seal the win.

• The game was originally suspended on Friday in the top of the fifth with one out due to severe weather in the area.
• Trainer posted her fifth shutout of the season and struck out nine in her 13th complete game outing.
Game Two: Indiana 5, Penn State 2
KEY MOMENTS
• Indiana went up early as Westmoreland knocked a two-run home to left center in the first, also plating Jenkins who had reached on a one-out single.
• The Hoosiers tacked on a run in the second after freshman Tete Hart reached on a fielding error then scored on a single by Lambert through the right side.
• Another two-run shot in the third extended the IU lead to 5-0, this time off the bat of sophomore Grayson Radcliffe. Her homer knocked off the scoreboard in left and plated Jenkins, who had reached on a fielding error.
• Penn State chipped into the Indiana lead in the fourth, first on an RBI single by Kurland to score Lilia Crouthamel. The Nittany Lions made it 5-2 on a sacrifice fly from Tori Dubois that plated Kurland.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Westmoreland's homer was her eighth of the season and sixth in Big Ten action. She sits just behind Radcliffe for the team lead, who now has nine on the year.
• Indiana stole three bases on the day and increased the season total to 136, good for third most in Big Ten history.
• Sophomore Emily Goodin got the start and went 3.0 innings, collecting six strikeouts. Freshman Natalie Foor made a relief appearance in the fourth, going 0.2 scoreless frames and striking out one.
• Trainer earned the win as she tossed 3.1 hitless frames in relief and struck out six. She improved her season record to 25-9, tied with Sally Woods (1983) for the fifth most wins in a single year at Indiana. In addition, she set a new career high with 223 strikeouts on the season.
• For her career, she now has 67 wins and passes Christy Brown (1988-91) for the third-most career victories in Indiana history.
• IU improves to 35-19 on the season and 10-12 in Big Ten play. Penn State falls to 23-31 with a 6-16 conference record.

Great to see Maddie and Grayson go yard. Defensively, we were on and Bella made some really good plays behind the plate in both games."
