BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Big Ten Conference recognized a total of 1,601 students on fall sports rosters who have been named to the Academic All-Big Ten Team Thursday. This year's honoree total marks the most since the award was established in 1990.
The list of honorees includes 124 field hockey students, 582 football students, 139 men's and 222 women's cross country students, 139 men's and 260 women's soccer students and 135 volleyball students.
Indiana had a total of 114 honorees on the list for the fall of 2020. That total is an improvement from the 83 honorees in 2019 and exceeds the previous record of 107 in 2018.
This comes after a school record of 121 Indiana student-athletes earned Spring/At-Large Academic All-Big Ten honors and a record 96 honorees earned the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award in 2019.
"As we navigate these unprecedented times, I am so proud that we have a record 114 fall student-athletes being recognized as Academic All-Big Ten honorees this fall," said IU Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Scott Dolson. "We take tremendous pride in our students' successes in the classroom, and we are excited to celebrate this record-breaking performance. This also speaks volumes about our Academic Services staff, led by Lo Price, and the job they've done during challenging times."
To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, students must be on a varsity team, as verified by being on the official squad list as of November 1 for fall sports, who have been enrolled fulltime at the institution for a minimum of 12 months and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
Big Ten Faculty Representatives established the Distinguished Scholar Award in 2008 to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program. Similar to the Academic All-Big Ten honor, Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution. However, the Distinguished Scholar Award encompasses only students with a minimum GPA of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year, excluding summer school. The Academic All-Big Ten threshold is a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for a student's academic career.
