IU To Host Third Annual Hoosier Classic

Bloomington, Ind.—Indiana Women's Water Polo will be hosting their third annual Hoosier Classic over the weekend. Villanova, No. 25 California Baptist and St. Francis (PA) will also be playing in the Classic and every team will get a chance to play each other. All IU games will be streamed on BTN+.
Indiana will open up the Hoosiers Classic at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15 against St. Francis (PA) and its second game of the day will be against California Baptist at 5:30 p.m. IU will close out its weekend by playing at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 16 against Villanova. IU is currently 6-3 all time in the event.
Hoosiers Finish Eighth at Triton Invite
This past weekend the Hoosiers competed in the UCSD Triton Invitational in La Jolla, CA, where they came away with an eighth place finish. The Hoosiers started hot with a 12-11 overtime win against No. 9 UC Davis, which was their highest win over a ranked opponent since beating No. 6 Hawaii on Jan. 22, 2017.
Despite losing the next three games, Indiana kept all of the games close against highly ranked teams including the likes of No. 3 UCLA (L, 12-9), No. 5 UC Irvine (L, 12-7) and No. 12 Long Beach State (L, 10-9).
Abarta and Doherty Continue Strong Starts
Senior Megan Abarta and sophomore Tina Doherty each had big weekends in La Jolla to continue their strong starts to the season. Doherty started the weekend off with back-to-back five-goal games and finished with 11 for the weekend. She now leads the team in goals with 23 and has three games with five goals this season.
Abarta was right behind Doherty with with nine goals on the weekend including the game winner in sudden death overtime against UC Davis. She also put up a career-high five goals against Long Beach State to close out the tournament. For the season she is second on the Hoosiers' list with 18 goals.
Crouch Leading the Freshman Charts
Zoe Crouch continued her dominant freshman season over the weekend in La Jolla and managed to score in all four games. She tied her career high of two goals in the win over UC Davis and managed to put up a goal each in the final three contests.
Crouch now leads the freshman in scoring with nine goals on the season and has scored in seven of the team's first eight games.
Team Defense a Key for Hoosier Classic
Indiana's team defense will be a key for them this weekend if they want to be successful. IU's opponents are averaging 10.8 goals per game this season and the Hoosiers are 1-5 when the team gives up double-digit scoring.
When the Hoosier defense holds teams to under 10 goals in a game, they are 2-0 on the season with wins coming over No. 11 Pacific and No. 24 Marist.
