Hoosiers Head West To UCSD Triton Invite
2/6/2020 2:50:00 PM | Women's Water Polo
Bloomington, Ind.—Indiana Women's Water Polo will head west for the first time this season to take place in their second tournament of the year in La Jolla, CA at the UCSD Triton Invite. The invite is loaded with talent as 12 of the 16 teams were ranked in the latest version of the CWPA Top 25.
The Hoosiers will open up the invite against No. 9 UC Davis at 12:20 p.m. on Saturday at the Canyonview Pool, one of the two pools being used in the event. IU will play in two games both days of the invite with their final three opponents being decided based on results of earlier games.
Indiana opened the season ranked 23rd in the CWPA rankings but after a 2-2 showing at the Michigan Invitational on Jan. 25-26 and wins over two ranked teams (Pacific and Marist), the Hoosiers jumped up three spots to No. 20 in the Jan. 29 rankings. In the latest rankings the Hoosiers moved up another spot to No. 19.
Battling Until the End
The Michigan Invitational proved to be battle-tested for the Hoosiers who battled from behind in three of the four games. The Hoosiers led throughout against Pacific but trailed by as many as four against No. 9 UCSB and No. 21 Wagner before tying UCSB up in the fourth quarter and eventually taking a lead on Wagner. IU also trailed for most the majority of the first half against No. 24 Marist before recording their second win of the season.
Indiana will likely have to continue their toughness over the upcoming weekend with all of the opponents being highly touted.
Returners and Freshmen Making Impacts
The Hoosiers will have a mix of experience and newcomers leading the way at the UCSD Triton Invite. Doherty and Abarta had big opening weekends as returners for the Hoosiers, scoring 12 and nine goals, respectively. Abarta also led the team with six steals and recorded four assists and Doherty had a five-goal game against Wagner.
Freshmen Berta Pascual and Zoe Crouch are 4th and 5th on the scoring list for Indiana with five and four goals. Pascual added three assists on the weekend and Crouch recorded two assists and two steals.
