BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Big Ten Conference announced on Wednesday that 1,098 students – including 96 from Indiana athletics teams – have earned the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award. The list includes students from all 14 institutions and 38 different sports, who have recorded a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year.
The 96 honorees from Indiana represents a school record and a significant improvement from the 67 individuals who received this recognition for the 2018-19 school year. This comes on the heels of 121 Indiana student-athletes earning spring/at-large Academic All-Big Ten Honors, another program record.
"On my first day as Indiana University's athletic director, it is a tremendous honor to congratulate our school-record 96 students who earned the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar recognition for their excellence in the classroom this past year," said IU Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Scott Dolson. "This accomplishment speaks to the dedication that our students displayed during a year filled with unforeseen challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I commend our students for their perseverance, and our Excellence Academy staff for the vital role they also played in this remarkable record achievement."
Big Ten Faculty Representatives established the Distinguished Scholar Award in 2008 to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program. Similar to the Academic All-Big Ten honor, Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must be letter winners in at least their second academic year at their institution. However, the Distinguished Scholar Award encompasses only students with a minimum GPA of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year, excluding summer school. The Academic All-Big Ten threshold is a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for a student's academic career.
