Volleyball Heads East For Matches At Rutgers and Maryland

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Volleyball (7-9, 1-3 Big Ten) embarks on an East Coast swing this weekend with matches against Rutgers (8-7, 0-4 Big Ten) and (RV) Maryland (13-3, 1-3 Big Ten). The Hoosiers will clash with the Scarlet Knights in Piscataway, N.J. on Friday, October 8 at 7 p.m. before a matchup with the Terrapins on Saturday, October 9 also at 7 p.m. Both matches will stream live on Big Ten Network Plus.

The Opening Serve
• Junior defensive specialist Paula Cerame continues to rank No. 5 in digs among the Big Ten after tallying a team-leading 258 so far this season.
• Freshman setter Camryn Haworth is having a solid start to her first campaign with Indiana as she currently ranks No. 6 in the Big Ten in aces with 22.
• Junior middle blocker Kaley Rammelsberg is leading the Hoosier attack, tallying 116 kills and a percentage of .394 so far in 2021. Her percentage is good enough for seventh in the conference.
• As a team, Indiana ranks No. 8 in digs and No. 9 in blocks amongst the Big Ten. The Hoosiers are averaging 14.17 digs per set and 2.35 blocks per set.
• Indiana owns the all-time series between the Hoosiers and Scarlet Knights, 13-1. The two teams met back in 2019 on back-to-back days where Rutgers took the first match, 3-1 (25-18, 17-25, 19-25, 20-25) before Indiana bounced back and won the second, 3-1 (25-19, 25-15, 9-25, 25-23).
• The Terrapins hold the advantage in the all-series, 9-4. The two squads split the last two-game meeting this past spring. Indiana won the first game, 3-0 (27-25, 25-22, 25-19) while Maryland picked up the victory in the second game, 3-1 (23-25,25-23, 17-25,21-25).
Checking Out the Competition
•RUTGERS: Caitlin Schweihocker is the head coach of the Scarlet Knights and is in her second season with the program. Rutgers has an 8-7 overall record and is 0-4 in the Big Ten. Redshirt senior middle blocker Shea McNamara leads the way on attack with 100 kills and hitting percentage of .304. McNamara also has a team-leading 66 blocks in 2021. Senior Inna Balyko is their main setter who has recorded 450 assists so far this season. The Scarlet Knights are allowing their opponents to hit .212 while they are hitting .213.
•MARYLAND: Adam Hughes sits at the helm of the Maryland squad and has coached them to a 13-3 overall record and 1-3 in conference play. Their lone Big Ten win was over then No. 2 Wisconsin. Graduate student outside hitter Paula Neciporuka leads the Terps attack with 163 kills and is hitting .230 so far this season. Sophomore outside hitter Sam Csire also has triple figure kills with 190 which is a team high. On defense, Senior middle blocker Rainelle Jones has thrown up a team-leading 92 blocks and is averaging 1.80 per set. Sophomore Sydney Dowler is Maryland's main setter and has accounted for 574 of the Terrapins 638 assists this season. Maryland leads the Big Ten in opponent hitting percentage, allowing its opposing team to hit just .141. The Terrapins also lead the conference in digs with 895.
Last Time Out
• Last time the Hoosiers were in action was this past weekend when they hosted No. 14 Penn State at Wilkinson Hall. Despite letting the Nittany Lions take the first set, Indiana bounced back to win the second frame. After falling in the third the Hoosiers forced a fourth set but couldn't hang on as Penn State won the match, 3-1 (24-26, 25-20, 16-25, 22-25). Senior outside hitter Breana Edwards led the Hoosiers on offense with 18 kills and a hitting percentage of .349. The Rainer, Ore. native also tallied two blocks.
New & Notes
• Senior outside hitter Breana Edwards recorded the 1000th kill of her career in the match at Georgia Tech on Sept. 10. Edwards has a team-leading 188 kills so far in 2021.
• Graduate Student setter Brooke Westbeld has put up 361 assists which leads the Hoosiers.
• Junior middle blocker Kaley Rammelsberg has reached triple figure kills with 116 and leads the team in hitting percentage at .394.
• Sophomore middle blocker Savannah Kjolhede is the squad leader in blocks with 52 and has recorded 90 kills on offense.
• Freshman setter Camryn Haworth has made her presence known and leads the team in aces with 20 so far this season. She has also taken over the starting setter role and has contributed 210 assists.
• Senior outside hitter Kari Zumach has recorded at least one block in the last four matches she has played in. On the attack Zumach has tallied 57 kills for a hitting percentage of .240.
• As a team, the Hoosiers are hitting .201 compared to their opponents .187.
