Below are partial transcriptions of Zoom press conferences with WR Ty Fryfogle, LB Micah McFadden and CB Tiawan Mullen on Tuesday, Mar. 9.
WR Ty Fryfogle
Q. What went into your decision to come back…
FRYFOGLE: There were a lot of things that factored into me coming back. Obviously, one being the way that last season ended. With this football team I feel like we left a lot on the table last season. We have a lot more to accomplish and the future is bright for this team. We are getting better each and every day. With spring ball, we have 15 opportunities to get better and build off what we did last season. I feel like we can accomplish whatever we want to this season. I had some great accomplishments last season, but there were some things I needed to work on. All of the things from last season go out the window, this is a new season and I need to do it all over again at an even better rate. We have a really good football team, and a lot of guys are coming back. I feel like everything is in our favor. We can do everything that we want to accomplish this season.
Q. Talk about what you have told the new guys in the wide receiver room…
FRYFOGLE: It comes with hanging out with them, lifting weights with them, going over plays with them, and running routes. We have been getting them up to speed and showing them what we do here at Indiana. They are going to be really good and really special to the offense this season.
Q. On the Big Ten East…
FRYFOGLE: We have a lot of guys coming back and this football team is going to be special. We play in a tough conference week in and week out. We will be facing top-tier teams, so do not overlook anybody because I feel like anybody can win the Big Ten this year. We are going to work towards that each and every day, whether it is in the weight room or film room. We are going to work towards that goal each and every day.
LB Micah McFadden
On not taking things for granted…
McFADDEN: I think the whole team is a lot more locked in. Just with that recognition that really can end any spontaneous moment. A lot of guys recognize that and I think this spring ball a lot of guys are ready to attack and perfect their craft.
On new defensive coordinator Charlton Warren…
McFADDEN: I think its relationally getting to know Coach Warren as a person and a coach as well. Getting down the terminology, knowing what to communicate when and getting everyone on the same page. All those things are so important this spring.
On what he needs to do to take the next step as a player…
McFADDEN: I think it's just mastering my craft, getting all my individual technique down, my footwork, and also being a leader out there. I think a big thing for me is going to be keeping weight on and playing at 230 pounds this year. That will be probably the most important thing.
CB Tiawan Mullen
On being a leader on the defense…
MULLEN: It's a great feeling, a great honor. When I first came in, the guys, the coaches trusted me. Playing special teams, playing defense, whatever they needed me to do. I went out there and did my job and gained their trust. Headed into my junior year, it's just an honor to play with those guys beside me and the coaches who coach me. It's an honor to have their trust and be myself out there, making plays for the team.
On the importance of spring practice…
MULLEN: It's great. It's kind of my first spring football since we didn't get through last year's. Everybody's getting back together, getting back in the groove, getting to understand Coach Warren and him getting to understand us. It's great, everything went well today. There are a few things we have to fix, but it went great today getting to know each other.
On getting to know Coach Warren…
MULLEN: We connected fast because Coach Allen always preached about being detailed, being a detailed guy, and Coach Warren came in being a detailed guy. He came in head on straight and gave it to us straight forward. We connected fast. We have our differences, but that's what we're trying to work on. Getting the communication down, getting the language down pat. It's been going pretty well since we've been meeting and our first day of spring.
