Hoosiers Clash With Michigan State In Big Ten Tournament

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.— Indiana Field Hockey heads to Iowa City, Iowa where they will embark on their journey in the postseason. The Hoosiers will face Michigan State on Tuesday, Apr. 20 in the first round of the Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament. The third matchup of the season between to the two teams is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET and will broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.

Last Time Out: Regular Season Finale
The Hoosiers got their first win of the season this past Thursday in an overtime thriller. After going down 2-0 earlier, Mary Kate Kesler and Anna Gwiazdzinski scored goals that went unanswered by the Spartans. Sachi Ananias made two clutch saves at the end of regulation to push the match to overtime. Seconds into the first overtime period, Emma Martin played the long ball into the circle to Peyton Becker who flicked it in the cage to get the 3-2 victory.
On Saturday, Indiana played Michigan for the second time this season. The Hoosiers couldn't find any offense to match the Wolverines as Michigan would take the 3-0 advantage. Sachi Ananias and Sofi Keen were honored for Senior Day postgame.
2018 B1G Tournament
After missing the 2019 tournament, this is the second consecutive time that the Hoosiers will face Michigan State in the Big Ten Tournament. In 2018, Indiana took the Spartans to the brink but would fall 3-2 in overtime. Senior Sachi Ananias played in goal and came up with nine saves.
Career Firsts
Emma Martin scored her first career goal against Michigan on Mar. 5. She also appeared in her first game and got her first career start during opening weekend. Martin also has three defensive saves on the season.
Freshmen Meghan Dillon, Sophie Giltrap, and Anna Gwiazdzinski have taken their first shots of their Indiana careers. Gwiazdzinski leads the pack with 12 shots and scored her first career goal at Michigan State on April 15. Freshman goalkeeper Shannon McNally got her first career start against Rutgers week one.
New Year, New Faces
The Hoosiers add nine newcomers to their roster for the 2020-21 season. Jemima Cookson, Meghan Dillon, Taylor Etling, Brinley Foster, Sophie Giltrap, Anna Gwiazdzinski, Emma Martin, and Shannon McNally join Indiana as freshman. Sydney Keld joined the team in January 2020 as a transfer from the University of Delaware.
Turning to the staff, Will Holt enters his first season as an assistant under Head Coach Kayla Bashore. Holt brings a wealth of experience to Bloomington as he is a member of the US Men's National Field Hockey Team. He also has coached and played for many organizations across Europe.
