A Pair Of Big Ten Champions Caps Off First Day of B1G Championships

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Nathan Stone and Ben Veatch of Indiana Track & Field kicked off the Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships for Indiana by picking up individual Big Ten titles.
Through the first day of competition the men hold the top spot with 27 points while the Indiana women have not recorded points towards their team total.
Stone completed the indoor/outdoor sweep of the pole vault on Friday night with a clearance of 5.42m (17' 9.25"). Brock Mammoser also picked up .33 points for the Hoosiers as he tied for eighth with a height of 5.12m (16' 9.5").
Veatch won the 10,000m with a time of 29:09.13. This is the first time in his career that he has won the event at the conference championships. Kyle Mau crossed sixth with a time of 29:13.23 to get three points for the Indiana men.
Alyssa Robinson and Natalie Price will represent Indiana in the finals of the 200m. Robinson notched a time of 23.64 while Price saw a time of 23.71.
Shaton Vaughn will appear in the finals of the 400m hurdles on Sunday after clocking a time of 52.17 in the prelims.
Turning to middle distance, four women advanced to the final of 1500m. Bailey Hertenstein had the fastest time of 4:22.76 while Hannah Stoffel clocked the third fastest prelim time of 4:22.97. Kelsey Harris picked up a time of 4:26.33 to advance as a an automatic while Jenna Barker rounded out the field of Hoosiers with a time of 4:25.17.
Three advanced to Sunday's final on the men's side of 1500m with personal record finishes. Matthew Schadler led the way by crossing in a time of 3:43.61. Arjun Jha had the fourth best time in the prelim with a time of 3:43.81. Dustin Horter rounded out the trio by securing a time of 3:45.30.
Logan Targgart finished his first Big Ten Conference Championships hammer throw in fifth with a mark 65.29m (214' 2"). He tallied four points towards the men's team score. \
In the women's heptathlon, Hope Purcell kicked it off with a personal record in the 100m hurdles. She clocked a time of 14.10 to pick up 964 points. The high jump was next where Purcell cleared a height of 1.71m (5' 7.25") for 769 points. The Lancaster, Ohio native put a mark of 10.66m (34' 11.75") and garnered 573 points before clocking a time of 26.32 to get 769 points. Purcell ended the first day of the championship in eighth with 3, 173 points.
The Hoosiers return to action on Saturday, May 15. Purcell will kick off day two for Indiana in the heptathlon long jump at 1 p.m. ET. The first event on the track for the Hoosiers will be the men's 400m prelims beginning at 5 p.m. ET.
