BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Big Ten Conference announced on Wednesday that 1,517 students – including 105 from Indiana athletics teams – have earned the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award. The list includes students from all 14 institutions and 38 different sports, who have recorded a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year.
The 105 honorees from Indiana represents a school record and the second straight year the Hoosiers have set a record for most honorees. It also represents a significant improvement from the 67 honorees in the 2018-19 school year. In the 2019-20 school year it was 96 honorees. This also comes on the heels of 155 Indiana student-athletes earning spring/at-large Academic All-Big Ten Honors, another program record.
"Congratulations to our school-record 105 student-athletes who have succeeded at the very highest levels in the classroom and earned Big Ten Distinguished Scholar accolades this year," said IU Vice President and Director of Athletics Scott Dolson. "Nothing is more important to our department than supporting our students' efforts to succeed academically, which is what makes this type of recognition so meaningful. These students have performed at a level that places them among the very best on the entire Bloomington campus, and they have done that while also managing the significant demands that come with representing IU athletically. This is a tremendous accomplishment that we take enormous pride in."
Big Ten Faculty Representatives established the Distinguished Scholar Award in 2008 to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program. Similar to the Academic All-Big Ten honor, Distinguished Scholar Award recipients must be letter winners in at least their second academic year at their institution. However, the Distinguished Scholar Award encompasses only students with a minimum GPA of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year, excluding summer school. The Academic All-Big Ten threshold is a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for a student's academic career.
