
Hoosiers Bounce Back With 3-0 Win Over Alabama A&M

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Volleyball (6-4) opened the Indiana Invitational with a bounce back win over Alabama A&M (0-8) on Thursday night in straight sets. Breana Edwards highlighted the night with her 1000th kill of her career.
KEY MOMENTS
• The Hoosiers got out to a 7-1 lead in the opening set which included three kills by Mady Saris and two by Morgan Geddes. A quick shot by Savannah Kjolhede gave Indiana a 10-2 advantage, forcing the Bulldogs to call a timeout.
• Indiana kept on rolling through the set by going on going on a 9-1 run to make the score 18-3. Checking in for the Hoosiers, Sophie Oliphant recorded back-to-back aces before a kill by Geddes gave Indiana the 25-8 set one victory.
• A pair of attack errors by the Bulldogs put Indiana in front as the second set of action began. Edwards gave the Hoosiers their first attack point of the set. Making it one point game after an error by the Indiana offense, kills by Kjolhede, Saris and Edwards helped keep the momentum alive and Alabama A&M was forced to take a break down, 17-9.
• Elle Hillers scored her first point of the season to give the Hoosiers a 18-10 advantage.
• Two slams by Edwards and one from Kjolhede helped Indiana close out set two with a 25-12 win.
• Saris kept the aggressive attack going in the third set by scoring the first three of four Hoosier points.
• Camryn Haworth tallied three straight aces to put the Hoosiers on top 12-6.
• Up 13-9, Indiana needed a breather as the Bulldogs crept their way back into the frame. Kills by Geddes and Saris ensured that the Hoosiers kept the momentum going.
• A quick slam by Kjolhede made the Bulldogs take their final timeout. Out of the break strong kills by Edwards and Kjolhede aided the Hoosiers in taking the third and final set, 25-17.
NOTABLES
•With the straight set sweep of Alabama A&M, Indiana improves to 6-4 on the 2021 season. They are also now 3-0 against the Bulldogs.
• Freshman outside hitter Mady Saris led the Hoosier attack with 15 kills against the Bulldogs.
• Junior defensive specialist Paula Cerame had a team-high 11 digs. Cerame also recorded her first kill of the season.
• Graduate student setter Brooke Westbeld put up 20 assists to lead the squad.
• Junior defensive specialist Sophie Oliphant recorded her first two aces of the 2021 campaign. This was also the first match this season that the Carmel, Ind. native saw game action.
• Sophomore middle blocker Elle Hillers received her first career start on Thursday night. Hillers tallied two blocks along with an assist and a kill.
• Senior outside hitter Breana Edwards recorded eight kills and two blocks. Edwards was also welcomed into the 1000 kills club on Thursday night.
• Sophomore middle blocker Savannah Kjolhede had a team-high tying two blocks and added six kills to the box score.
• Sophomore outside hitter Morgan Geddes had six kills and a block for Indiana.
• Sophomore outside hitter Grae Gosnell tallied the first three kills of her career.
• Freshman setter Camryn Haworth and junior outside hitter Ashley Zulauf contributed one kill each. Haworth also put up three aces while Zulauf had one.
• Haley Armstrong, Kenzie Daffinee, and Emily Fitzner all checked in against Alabama A&M.
• The 10 aces by the Hoosiers were a season high by the squad.
• As a team, the Hoosiers saw a .345 hitting percentage which was a season high.
• Indiana had 36 digs compared to the Bulldogs 19.

The Hoosiers return to action on Friday, September 17 to wrap up the Indiana Invitational. Indiana will play Chicago State at 10 a.m. followed by Ole Miss at 7 p.m. Both matches will stream live on BTN Plus.
