Hoosiers Fall in Season Opener to Utah

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana women's tennis team playing with five student-athletes due to COVID-19 protocols came up short, 5-2 against Utah on Sunday at the IU Tennis Center.
The Hoosiers (0-1) had to play their first match of the season with only five players. As a result, they forfeited the No. 3 doubles match and the No. 6 singles match.
Utah (6-0) won the No. 2 doubles match to clinch the doubles point and had a 2-0 lead in the match before the first singles match was started.
Alexandra Staiculescu put the Hoosiers on the board with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles.
Indiana won four of five first sets in singles, but Utah came back to win second sets at five singles and three singles. The Utes turned those into victories with wins in the third set to clinch the overall team match.
Lara Schneider played a strong match for the Hoosiers at No. 1 singles. Schneider won her first set in a tiebreak, 7-4 and backed it up with a 6-4 win in the second set for the straight set victory.
Up next the Hoosiers host Yale (Feb. 4) and Marquette (Feb. 6) at the IU Tennis Center.
