MADISON, Wisc. – At arguably the biggest meet outside of the NCAA Championships, the Indiana Cross Country teams faced a field of stiff competition at Wisconsin's Nuttycombe Invitational on Friday afternoon.
Featuring 43 ranked squads (24 women, 19 men), the Hoosiers raced their final tune-up before the calendar flips to the postseason in two weeks for the Big Ten Cross Country Championships.
Sarah Schmitt paced IU's women to 25th place as a team with a 43rd-place individual finish after crossing the line in 20:28.7.
The Naperville, Ill. native progressed efficiently over the 6000 meters. She came in at 66th through the first 2K before jumping 12 spots and 11 spots respectively over the next two intervals of 2,000 meters.
Five Big Ten programs were represented with Schmitt finishing 2nd among conference opponents.
She was IU's top finisher of the day followed by Mariah Wehrle (20:38.5). Maddie Dalton (21:10.4), Jenna Barker (21:27.5) and Alyssa Skorge (21:29.4) rounded out the scoring for the Hoosiers.
Schmitt continues to have an outstanding season as she prepares to head to the conference meet in Ann Arbor on Oct. 28th, a meet she was 14th in a season ago.
The men were led by top-100 finishes from Jake Gebhardt (69th, 23:53.9) and Gabriel Sanchez (85th, 23:59.5).
One of Gebhardt or Sanchez has been the top finisher at all four competitions this season.
Camden Marshall (24:30.9), Austin Haskett (24:33.1) and Abe Eckman (24:57.1) rounded out the scoring for IU on the afternoon.
The Hoosiers will have next weekend off before heading to Ann Arbor for the 2022 Big Ten Cross Country Championships.
IU will be looking for its first Big Ten title since 1990 (Women) and 2013 (Men) when it hits the course against the conference's best.
