BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The postseason will officially begin in the 2022 Cross Country season on Friday morning when Indiana heads to Ann Arbor for the Big Ten Cross Country Championships.
After racing two championship events in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Hoosiers have returned to a normal slate and head to the postseason having raced some of the nation's best competition.
During the regular season, IU raced at the Coaching Tree Invitational, Paul Short Invite and the prestigious Nuttycombe Invitational in preparation for the stiff competition it will face in the Big Ten and beyond.
The women, paced by the outstanding duo of Sarah Schmitt and Mariah Wehrle, are one of seven programs in the conference that head into the weekend ranked or receiving votes.
Last season, Schmitt was named Second Team All-Big Ten after finishing 14th in the October race in Happy Valley.
Four of IU's five scorers from last year are scheduled to race this weekend including Mikaela Ramirez and Maddie Dalton.
The men are led by the outstanding duo of Jake Gebhardt and Gabriel Sanchez who have combined to be IU's top finisher in all four competitions so far this season.
Three of IU's five scorers from last year's roster return including Austin Haskett and Skylar Stidam.
Abe Eckman and Camden Marshall have enjoyed breakout campaigns in their first seasons running Cross Country at the collegiate level.
Last season saw the IU men finish fourth in the Big Ten with the women right behind in fifth.
The men will be looking for a first team title since 2013 while the women go for their first since 1990.
Racing will commence at 10:45 with the Women's 6K and will continue at 11:45 AM with the Men's 8K.
