BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana Volleyball team (10-10, 3-5) will reach the midpoint of the Big Ten season this weekend when it heads to Michigan for a pair of matches against No. 25 Michigan and Michigan State.
IU was victorious the last time out, defeating Michigan State in a grueling, five-set battle last Sunday in Wilkinson Hall.
With the win over the Spartans, IU matched its overall win total from a season ago (10) with 12 matches left to play this year.
Friday's date with the Wolverines will be the sixth match against ranked opposition and the fifth in the conference. IU took No. 9 Purdue to five sets last Friday and took No. 6 Ohio State to four sets at the beginning of the month.
IU will meet Michigan State Sunday for the second time in a week. The Hoosiers are aiming for the first conference sweep of an opponent since beating Rutgers twice in 2021.
This weekend's matches will be streamed on BTN+ with start times of 7:00 PM (Friday, No. 25 Michigan) and 2:00 PM (Sunday, Michigan State).
The Hoosiers:
• This marks the 48th season of Indiana Volleyball including the fifth under head coach Steve Aird.
• Mady Saris has gotten a heavy load of the offense this season and has produced the numbers to help the Hoosiers.
• Saris is third in the Big Ten in kills (277) and has been in double-digits on 17 different occasions. Against Iowa on Oct. 8, she set a career high with 22 kills.
• Paula Cerame has been steady on the backline for the Hoosiers in her final season. She owns 284 digs including a combined 48 over the weekend in matches with No. 9 Purdue and Michigan State.
• One of the most veteran players in the NCAA, Cerame was absolutely clinical when needed most over the weekend. She had 25 digs against Purdue as IU pushed the No. 9 team in the nation to the brink in five sets.
• Against Michigan State, she dug nearly every ball thrown her way. Despite missing a majority of the fourth set with a bum ankle, she shook off the pain and recorded 23 digs, three aces and one assist as IU broke a four-match losing streak.
• Camryn Haworth is No. 3 in the Big Ten with 674 assists this year. She is also tied for No. 2 with 31 service aces. Her versatile skillset has seen her earn 82 kills, 180 digs and 24 blocks as well.
• Over the past few weeks, the Hoosiers have gotten some gutsy performances from Ashley Zulauf in her final season with the team.
• In a five-set battle against Michigan State, Zulauf had a career high seven kills to go along with three digs, three blocks, two aces and one assist. IU would go on to win the match in the fifth set.
• After missing a pair of games with injury against No. 7 Wisconsin and Iowa, Morgan Geddes made her return to IU's starting lineup and provided instant impact for the Hoosiers.
• Against No. 9 Purdue and Michigan State, Geddes had a combined 20 kills. She also had two digs and four blocks in her first games back. If Kaley Rammlesberg can return against Michigan, IU would have a full lineup for the first time since the first three sets against Texas A&M on Sept. 16.
• Despite arriving in the United States at the beginning of August, Candela Alonso-Corcelles has quietly put together a solid freshman campaign.
• She's contested every one of IU's 20 matches and owns 138 kills, 75 digs and 20 blocks. She's been in double digits in kills on four separate occasions.
The Opposition:
No. 25 Michigan (13-5)
• The Wolverines come into the weekend with a 13-5 record and a 4-4 record in the Big Ten. Michigan swept Penn State on the road and also went to Northwestern for a four-set win.
• Mark Rosen has guided Michigan to 19 tournament appearances in his 24 seasons at the helm of Michigan including a first-round game in 2021.
• Outside hitter Jess Mruzik owns 227 kills this year and is averaging 4.15 points per set for Michigan. Both Jess Robinson and Kendall Murray enter the weekend with 154 kills apiece.
• Senior setter Maddie Dowd helps pace the Michigan offense while libero Hannah Grant handles things in the back row.
Michigan State (10-9)
• Leah Johnson is amidst her first season at the helm of Michigan State. Prior to her time in East Lansing, Johnson helped guide Illinois State to four-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.
• IU saw Michigan State just one week ago, beating the Spartans 3-2 in a five-set battle in Wilkinson Hall. Mady Saris had 21 kills and Paula Cerame had 23 digs to pave the way in the win.
• Setter Zoe Nunez has 430 assists on the season while sharing time with Julia Bishop. Libero Nalani Iosia has been electric in her first season in East Lansing and owns 287 digs (3.93 per set).
