BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana men's soccer (5-2-3, 1-1-2 B1G) pulled off a 1-0 shutout of in-state rival Notre Dame (5-4-1, 2-2-0 ACC) Wednesday (Oct. 5) on Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium, boosted by another goal from redshirt senior Ryan Wittenbrink and the return of redshirt senior defender Daniel Munie for a full 90 minutes.
Wittenbrink's 25th-minute penalty goal, his fifth score of the season and second in three matches, was the difference as IU earned its 12th shutout in 15 matches at Armstrong Stadium going back to last season.
KEY MOMENTS
• 10' – Notre Dame had the first quality chance 10 minutes in when link up play found junior defender Paddy Burns with space in the box coming from the left wing. Burns fired a screamer, but it banged off the near post to keep the match scoreless.
• 25' – Reigning Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week Herbert Endeley, who has had a knack of creating goals of late, did so again Wednesday. The junior forward took on Notre Dame sophomore defender Mo Williams on the left wing and dribbled inside and past him. Williams mistimed his challenge and brought Endeley down just inside the 18-yard box to draw a penalty. Wittenbrink was tasked to take and buried it home while sending the keeper the wrong direction.
• 55' – The Fighting Irish were unfortunate again from the woodwork, as a bouncing shot from sophomore midfielder Bryce Boneau got past redshirt senior goalkeeper Bryant Pratt but hit off the post.
NOTABLES
• Indiana earned its 799th victory all-time.
• IU extended its home undefeated streak to 15 matches. The Hoosiers are 13-0-2 in that stretch, earning 12 clean sheets.
• Indiana is 5-1-2 since the start of September.
• The Hoosiers improved to 33-10-3 against Notre Dame all-time and moved to 5-0-1 over the last six matchups going back to 2017. All five of those wins have been decided by one goal.
• Wittenbrink improved his team-leading goal tally to five after sinking his second penalty in as many opportunities this season. The redshirt senior also leads IU with 13 points and has scored two goals and provided two assists over Indiana's last three matches.
• IU earned its third shutout of the season and first since September 9 versus Akron.
• Munie recorded his first start since September 9 versus Akron. The redshirt senior defender made his first appearance back from injury on Sunday (Oct. 2) against Michigan.
• Redshirt senior goalkeeper Bryant Pratt earned his first start since September 6 against St. John's.
