BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The postseason continues on familiar terrain as the Indiana Cross Country team heads to Terre Haute for a battle with some of the region's finest in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional.
This meet serves as one of nine qualifiers across the country to next week's NCAA Cross Country Championships in Stillwater, Okla.
The top two men's teams and women's teams will advance automatically out of each region with the final 13 to be selected at-large by the NCAA committee.
Individually, the top four finishers on non-advancing teams will also earn a spot at the NCAA Championships. Two additional individuals are selected at-large by the committee.
The Hoosiers have had men's runners earn individual bids to the NCAA meet at five-straight regionals, dating all the way back to 2016. There were no regionals in the 2020-2021 season.
IU last advanced as a team to the NCAA Cross Country Championships in 2019 when both the men and women received at-large bids.
Sarah Schmitt helps lead the women's team into the weekend. She was fifth at the Big Ten Championships two weeks ago and has been IU's top finisher in every race she's run this year.
Mariah Wehrle (19th) and Maddie Dalton (27th) were big point scorers at the Big Ten Championships as well for the women.
On the men's side, Gabriel Sanchez and Jake Gebhardt helped lead the Hoosiers to a third-place finish at the Big Ten Championships.
Sanchez earned All-Big Ten First Team honors with breakthrough, third-place finish individually. Gebhardt provided key points with a 16th-place finish. Austin Haskett (21st) and Camden Marshall were also in the top-25.
The Great Lakes Region features a strong core of Big Ten schools including Wisconsin, Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State as well as local powers Notre Dame and Butler.
Friday's races from the LaVern Gibson Championship XC Course in Terre Haute will begin at 10:00 AM with the Women's 6K and will finish at 11:00 AM with the Men's 10K.
The selection show for the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships will take place on Saturday, November 12th at 5:00 PM.
