Hoosiers Fall Short in Close Call with No. 16 Penn State

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Despite either holding a lead or bringing the score level in all three sets, the Indiana Volleyball team (13-14, 6-9) fell 0-3 in a contested Friday night matchup with No. 16 Penn State.
The Hoosiers had the game level in the redzone (20 points or later) in all three sets but couldn't secure the crucial points down the stretch, falling 22-25, 23-25, 22-25 to the Nittany Lions.
A match decided by a handful of back-and-forth plays saw the Hoosiers record more service aces and an equal number of blocks. Penn State dug 36 balls to IU's 29 while outhitting the Hoosiers .211 to .141 inside Wilkinson Hall.
Savannah Kjolhede equaled a game-high six blocks while Paula Cerame earned a game-high 10 digs for IU's defense.
Another short turnaround awaits IU with No. 9 Minnesota looming on Sunday in Minneapolis. The Hoosiers will have first serve from the Maturi Pavilion at 3:00 PM EST in two days' time.
SET 1 (Penn State 25, Indiana 22)
• Kenzie Daffinee opened the match with a serve that grazed the net and fell over for an ace and the first points of the game.
• Morgan Geddes blasted home a kill to push IU's early advantage out to 11-8 in the opening frame.
• Camryn Haworth served a ball that gave Penn State troubles for her first service ace of the match, forcing the Nittany Lions into a timeout with the Hoosiers up 14-10.
• Following an IU timeout, Morgan Geddes was set a designed play and buried it home to bring the Hoosiers within 22-23 in the opening set.
• Penn State would win the final two points, handing it the early advantage on the evening.
SET 2 (Penn State 25, Indiana 23)
• The two teams exchanged points through the first 18 rallies before a kill from Morgan Geddes and an attack error from Zoe Weatherington handed the Hoosiers the first two-point advantage of the game at 11-9.
• IU would fall behind 14-17 but came all the way back to tie the score at 19-all following a Penn State attacking error.
• The Hoosiers pushed it to 23-all but would drop the deuce game after Penn State finished off the final two points.
SET 3 (Penn State 25, Indiana 22)
• IU fell behind early at 4-10, forcing Steve Aird to burn his first timeout in the set.
• Down 17-21, the Hoosiers rattled off four-consecutive points with a block from Savannah Kjolhede and Camryn Haworth bringing the set level.
• Three-straight errors from IU would spell the end of the fight on Friday evening.
