MADISON, Wis. – Indiana women's swimming and diving remains the third-place team at the Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships following the second day of action inside Soderholm Family Aquatic Center on Thursday (Feb. 17).
Diving competitions kicked off on Thursday, and the Hoosiers took advantage. IU diving took three of the top five spots in the 1-meter dive final led by senior Kristen Hayden's silver medal performance that scored a 330.65. Tarrin Gilliland (324.25) and Anne Fowler (313) placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
The sister diving duo of freshman Megan Carter (276.25) and senior Taylor Carter (209.15) contributed key points in the B-final.
"It was a great team day for Indiana Diving," IU head diving coach Drew Johansen said. "The group was focused on bringing as many points as possible to the team total. The Carter sisters had a special moment diving together in the B-final. Kristen, Tarrin and Anne were all at the top of the leader board this evening, and second, fourth and fifth was a fantastic finish for the trio. We are excited to build on this momentum tomorrow."
Indiana sent nine swimmers to finals including five A-finalists. Seniors Mackenzie Looze and Noelle Peplowski finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 200 IM, while three Hoosiers captured top-eight placements in the 500 Freestyle final. IU closed the night with a seventh place showing in the 400 Medley Relay.
"The Hoosiers are really battling," IU head swimming coach Ray Looze said. "We have an outside shot at this thing, but we're going to need to string together some great preliminary sessions tomorrow morning. We have to come out with all guns blazing.
"I want to congratulate the divers on an outstanding day. We need to keep it rolling and put some pressure on the leaders."
