CLEMSON, S.C. – An early deficit was too much to overcome for the Indiana baseball program, as Clemson scored three early runs on its way to an 9-0 victory on the opening day of the 2022 college baseball season.
Nine Hoosiers made their collegiate debuts at Clemson. Tyler Doanes, Matthew Ellis, Phillip Glasser, Evan Goforth, Carter Mathison, Josh Pyne, Peter Serruto and Brock Tibbitts all debuted in the field, while Ryan Kraft made his collegiate debut on the mound.
The bullpen was a bright spot for IU, as Reese Sharp and Kraft tossed five combined innings with 13 strikeouts and just three runs - two earned - allowed. Sharp worked three innings and struck out a career-high seven batters. He allowed two runs on one hit and walked four in the outing. Kraft fanned six batters in his collegiate debut and surrendered just one unearned run on a pair of walks over the final two innings.
As a staff, Indiana struck out 17 Clemson hitters and allowed nine runs - seven earned - on just nine hits. Eight of the nine hits were singles, but the Hoosiers walked eight and hit one batter. Starting pitcher John-Biagio Modugno (0-1) fanned four batters in three innings of work. He surrendered six runs - five earned - in the loss.
The offense got hits from Morgan Colopy, Matthew Ellis and Bobby Whalen. Colopy, Ellis and freshman Carter Mathison were each on base twice in the game. Mathison worked a pair of walks in his first career start, Ellis singled and walked, while Colopy was hit-by-pitch and singled.
For Clemson, Mack Anglin (1-0) fired five no-hit innings with eight strikeouts and two walks to earn the victory. Offensively, Cooper Ingle chipped in two hits and two RBIs, while Benjamin Blackwell drove in a pair of runs. Caden Grice led all hitters with three hits.
