CLEMSON, S.C. – It was a back-and-forth affair on Sunday (Feb. 20) inside Doug Kingsmore Stadium, as the Indiana baseball program dropped a tough, 5-4, decision to Clemson in 10 innings.
Indiana (0-3) took the early lead on a Phillip Glasser home run in the first, but Clemson (3-0) responded with a run in the bottom of the inning. A single run in the third gave IU a brief lead, before the Tigers scored twice in the frame. Two runs in the sixth gave the Hoosiers the lead back, 4-3, but CU knotted the score with a single run in the seventh. Bryar Hawkins delivered the walk-off RBI in the 10th.
While Glasser's blast got the offense started, it was redshirt-sophomore Bobby Whalen that did the most damage for IU with four hits, one run scored and one RBI. Of his four hits, two went for doubles. Glasser was on base three times and scored twice. The senior's home run was accompanied by a single and a hit-by-pitch. Freshman Brock Tibbitts chipped in a pair of hits and drive in one RBI, while graduate student Tyler Doanes was on base three times – all via base on balls – and scored one run.
Seven of nine starters reached base for Indiana and the Hoosiers out-hit the Tigers, 9-7, in the contest. Each team benefited from the free pass, as IU drew nine walks and Clemson worked 12 walks in the game.
Junior Nathan Stahl threw four innings in the start and allowed three runs on two hits and struck out three batters in the no decision. Freshman Grant Holderfield tossed 2 1/3 innings of one-run relief and struck out two. Senior Braydon Tucker was the tough-luck loser with one run allowed over 2 2/3 innings of work. The right-hander struck out three and allowed four hits in the outing.
Freshman Luke Hayden made his collegiate debut on the mound and recorded two outs, the final a sacrifice fly.
For Clemson, Caden Grice homered as a part of a two-hit game and drove in three RBIs on the afternoon, and Dylan Brewer posted CU's only other multi-hit game with a single and a double. Grice was also the winning pitcher, as he tossed a scoreless 10th inning.
