ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Hoosier divers accounted for a third of the automatic qualifiers clinched in Ann Arbor on Monday (March 7).
Indiana men's and women's diving earned six bids to Atlanta during the opening day of the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships inside Donald B. Canham Natatorium.
IU had the top two finishers in both the men's 3-meter and women's 1-meter dive competitions to set the tone for the three-day event. Two more divers placed within the auto-qualifier cutline and secured trips to the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships later this month in Atlanta.
MEN'S 3-METER
With nine qualification spots up for grabs, the Hoosier men left no doubt as all three competitors placed within the top four.
Freshmen Carson Tyler and Quinn Henninger earned their first-career NCAA Championship bids, placing first and second, respectively, in the first event of the week. Tyler carded scores of 70 or better for four of his final six dives, including an 87.50 for a 307C.
Henninger was consistent Monday, scoring at least 60 points for all 12 of his dives. He finished with a flourish, tallying 84 points with a 5337D, his last dive of the day.
Reigning NCAA 3-Meter Champion Andrew Capobianco scored 811.85 points to finish well above the cutline in fourth. The senior was especially sharp in the final, scoring 70 points in five of his six dives.
WOMEN'S 1-METER
Senior Kristen Hayden and sophomore Anne Fowler cruised to a one-two finish in the 1-meter as the duo combined to score at least 45 points in 23 of 24 dives.
Sophomore Tarrin Gilliland survived the cutline and sat 17th after the preliminary six dives. She made up significant ground in the final, scoring 50 points for three of her dives to place eighth and nab one of nine qualifying bids.
