Hoosiers Set for Weekend Series at Penn State

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana softball team will travel to Penn State this weekend for a series against the Nittany Lions.

Indiana leads the all-time series history 44-28. The Hoosiers have won 10 of the last 11 games against Penn State.
Scouting the Opponent
After going 7-34 in the 2021 season the Nittany Lions are 23-15 in 2022 and 5-4 in Big Ten games. In their most recent game Penn State beat Michigan 3-2 in Ann Arbor. Penn State ranks fourth in the Big Ten in pitching with a team era of 2.79. The Nittany Lion ace Bailey Parshall has pitched in 136.2 inning. The next most on the staff is 72.2 innings. Parshall ranks third in the Big Ten in era at 1.54 and third in opposing battering average at .183. Offensively Cassie Lindmark leads Penn State with a .411 batting average and a .521 on base percentage.
Last Time Out
The Hoosiers picked up their first Big Ten series with a sweep of Rutgers. In the first game the Hoosiers came back from down 4-2 with a three-run fifth inning. In the second game the Hoosiers trailed again 2-1 and came up with a four-run inning to secure a 5-4 win. On the final day Indiana put up 11 runs including a six-run fourth inning. Cora Bassett and Taylor Minnick each hit .667 on the weekend. The pair combined for eight hits, two home runs and were walked a combined 10 times, including an intentional walk to Bassett.
Minnick Earns Big Ten Freshman of the Week
For the fourth time this season and third straight week a Hoosier was selected Big Ten Freshman of the Week. Minnick, a native of Bloomington, Ind., hit .667 on the weekend in the Hoosiers sweep over Rutgers. Minnick recorded four hits, five runs, a home run and was walked five times. Her slugging percentage was 1.500 and her on base percentage was .818. Minnick leads the Big Ten in batting average (.463) and on base percentage (.585), ranks second in OPS (1.414) and third in slugging percentage (.829).
Stanton Earns 700th Career Victory
With the Hoosiers 2-0 victory over Sam Houston State on March 19 IU head coach Shonda Stanton earned her 700th career victory. Stanton is in her 24th year as a head coach. Before arriving in Bloomington, she coached at Marshall for 18 seasons and is the winningest coach in Marshall history with 560 wins.
Copeland Freshman of the Week X3
On Monday April 4 Brianna Copeland earned her third Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor. Copeland provided fireworks in the Hoosiers 14-11 win over Kent State on March 30. Copeland hit three home runs to become the Hoosiers first freshman to ever hit three home runs in a game and just the third ever player to accomplish the feat. Copeland lifted the Hoosiers to victory with a walk-off three-run home run in the ninth inning of the game. Copeland is hitting .400 on the season with eight home runs.
The Long Ball
The Hoosiers have already surpassed their home run total from a season ago. Indiana has 40 home runs through 32 games this season. Last year the Hoosiers tallied 28 home runs in 44 games.
Attacking the Next 60 Feet
The Hoosiers rank fifth among NCAA DI softball teams in stolen bases at 2.56 per game. Tatum Hayes ranks third in the Big Ten in stolen bases with 20 and 22nd in the NCAA. The Hoosiers have stolen 81 bases this season compared to 23 from their opponents. Lindsey Warick has thrown out nine runners trying to steal bases this season.
2 Out Hitting
The Hoosiers have had excellent production with two outs this season. Indiana has scored 65 runs with two outs and are hitting .306 with two outs. Cora Bassett and Brianna Copeland are each individually hitting .500 with two outs. The Hoosiers have tallied 10 games this season in which they have scored at least three runs with two outs.
Roster Breakdown
The Hoosiers graduated seven seniors from Team 48 and have added seven newcomers to the roster for this season. The 2022 roster features 20 student-athletes with 10 upperclassmen. Grayson Radcliffe returns for her final season. The 2021 All-Big Ten Second Team performer hit .315 with 39 hits, 25 RBI and 16 stolen bases last season. The Hoosiers also return First Team All-Big Ten and All Freshmen Team standout Grace Lorsung. Lorsung tallied 29 hits and 20 RBI in 2021.
Fresh Faces in Bloomington
The Hoosiers signed four freshmen and added three transfers. Making their collegiate debuts will be Heather Johnson, Kinsey Mitchell, Brianna Copeland, Taylor Minnick and transfer Sarah Stone. Indiana added All-Big Ten student-athlete Cora Bassett from Purdue and Lindsey Warick from Missouri.
Jenkins Transitions into Coaching Role
The Hoosiers all-time leader in career stolen bases Gabbi Jenkins is out of eligibility, but will still be impacting the Hoosiers this season. Jenkins has stepped into a role as volunteer assistant coach and will continue to mentor the Hoosier student-athletes. In her final playing season, Jenkins earned All-Big Ten First Team honors as she hit .331 with 24 stolen bases and set an Indiana record for single season doubles with 18.
Ford Comes Up Big in Opening Weekend
Senior Brittany Ford hit .625 over four games for the Hoosiers in their opening weekend of play. In eight at bats she tallied two home runs, two runs, five hits, three extra-base hits, seven RBI, 12 total bases and a 1.500 slugging percentage. In the Hoosiers first game of the season, against Louisville she came off the bench to pinch hit and hit a home run in her only at bat. In game two she got the start and hit a grand slam to help the Hoosiers to an 11-1 win over Florida Atlantic. It is the second straight season she has hit a grand slam. Ford had at least one hit in all four of
the Indiana games this past weekend. Ford collected RBI in three of the four games and had multiple RBI in two of the games.
Johnson Shines in Florida
Freshman Heather Johnson made her first career start on Feb. 26 against No. 3 Florida State. Johnson retired 15 of the 20 batters she faced and had 4 strikeouts. She helped the Hoosiers to a 1-0 lead through five innings. The next day Johnson earned her first victory with a complete game shutout of Hofstra.
