"I am extremely proud of how our team finished off this weekend's races. We challenged them to try to take the intensity up a notch for their races today, and they really did great. Starting with the First Novice 8 and followed up by the two Varsity 8's, I don't think those athletes could have raced any better today. It was impressive to see how they responded from their races yesterday to put together great races today.
"Now, as we told them, starts the real work. Last year we were in a similar situation. We came out of this weekend with good results but then did not perform well at Big Tens. We have four weeks to prepare for that, and I am confident they have learned their lesson from last year and are going to make the most of these last few weeks of the regular season."
Senior Catherine Ryan (1V8)
On the impact of winning Saturday's race…
"It was a solidifying win for our crew. We believed in our abilities, and that win was the chance to show everyone that we are here to make a mark this year. We were very happy with how we were able to establish a lead and hold it throughout the race."
On Saturday's victory…
"We had a strong start out of the blocks and were able to shift down to a very strong and aggressive base rhythm. Prior to the race we really emphasized having full trust in [coxswain Katherine Nelson], and she had an amazing race. She really used the other crews to keep us moving. Coming through the 1,000 we reset, made it our race and focused on being long on both ends of the stroke to have the most effective rhythm possible. Ultimately, the trust we have in each other gave us the ability to win."
On crew's mindset as the season progresses…
"We took the time as a crew to discuss what helped us win that race, and now we need to replicate that in practice and in our races going forward."
Senior Ella Cunningham (1V8)
On the impact of winning Saturday's race…
"Winning this last race was a solidifying moment to know that we are capable of whatever we set our minds to. The night before we said we are winning or we will die trying, which may seem extreme, but that's how bad we wanted it. And you have to want it more than the other crews."
On Saturday's victory…
"As soon as we got hands on, we were locked in and focused. Our warmup was well executed, and we got to the starting line early and were able to just take a minute to mentally prepare. Our bow pair did a phenomenal job getting our bow in the boot from the start. We made our move around the 750 mark and started to take seats.
"Around 500 seats to go, Duke started challenging us, but we were able to send it even harder with the legs and swing to bow and come out clean."
On crew's mindset as the season progresses…
"It's important to know that other teams are going to be working hard, fixing things and getting faster. From our win today, we should not be overlooked. We know what we need to work on and improve, but we also know what we do well as a whole boat. We just need to keep grinding it out and trust the process."
